Forsberg or Not Forsberg?

According to The Sporting News Peter Forsberg has informed his agent that he wants to play in the NHL this season and he should start to negotiate with various clubs.
So the obvious question is: Should the Rangers make a play for Foppa?
I think the saying goes, “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” So on the logical end, the answer is a resounding no. This line of thinking would say that signing the injury riddled, 34-year-old, former superstar would be a continued regression back into the dark days of 1998-2004. This line of thinking would also say that signing the fading star would just take away valuable minutes from a youngster who could benefit from the time. This line of thinking would say that adding another huge name would only disrupt even further the already obvious lack of chemistry on this team. This line of thinking would probably be right.
But the funny thing about sports and sports fandom is that sometimes what’s logical isn’t always right and I think that might be the case right here.
I say, unless the Rangers go on a run over the next two weeks where they reel off 6 of 7 and do it in consistent, dominating fashion, they should just take one more chance and go for it.
I mean really, why the heck not?! What’s the worst that could happen?
Let’s for a second say that the Rangers just stay with the status quo. Even if they tinker here or there, the odds are that they’ll be fighting for the 8th seed from here on out and its a 50/50 shot at best that they get it. And even if they do, you’re delirious if you think they’re winning the Cup. So whether they don’t make the playoffs or they lose in the first or second round, they’ll be in the same place come late May.
Now think about this. A first line of Straka-Forsberg-Jagr and a second line of Shanahan-Gomez-Drury. Right there you get Jagr back with his European center and move Drury to the pressure-reduced role of winger. Right there you give the opposition two completely different styles to defend against. Right there, you have quite possibly two of the sexiest lines ever drawn up on the same squd.
How can you not be intrigued?
Now the article on The Sporting News’ website says that Forsberg will be asking for two-years. If that’s the case then I probably pass on the big man. But if you can get him for the remainder of this year with maybe a club option for the second year then I think you have to do it.
In that scenario, if you think logically, there’s really no risk. You don’t have to part with any of your own talent (as you would in a trade for Sundin or Vyborny) and the worst that happens is Forsberg’s a bust and you cut ties with him when the season’s over.
So you’re all entitled to your opinion, but know this. If the Rangers don’t do anything, the season’s down the tubes. So it may be worth it to take that one final shot at accomplishing what so many predicted this team would.
Taking that one final shot at Lord Stanley’s Cup.

NO WAY… This is the typical “old” rangers move, and i dont think he is the answer to our problems. yes he is a superstar, but i just dont see it working. and if those are the lines if he was on our team, i dont like that either. Drury needs to be a center, he is not a winger. i hate to say this, but the way it looks is like Drury is the man not fitting in. he showed he cant play with jagr, he has been mediocore at best with shanny, and putting him with the non producing prucha and company of kids doesnt seem to work. Forsberg isnt the answer but a center would help. there will wont be another sean avery out there. i think its simple, this team needs to look around the locker room and say the hell is going on. i like that tom renny was cursing at practice its about time he realized something is wrong. i am going to be very optamistic right now and say that this team will wake with these two huge games against philly and jersey and good things will come. but changes need to be made

NO NO NO! Unless Forsberg accepts a one year deal (which is essentially a half-season contract), there is no way in hell the Rangers should sign him. A two year deal would be a complete nightmare and a reversion to the Rangers of the late 90s. We are talking about a guy who missed games as a Flyer because he couldn’t find a skate that was “comfortable enough.” Give me a break! Pass.

I figured this would be the response from a lot of you. People’s Champ, I agree that you can’t do this if its a 2-year deal, but if you can convince him for one (and that of course is a big if) then I think you have to make this deal.
The team is in shambles right now and I really don’t think the solution is in the room. If it were, it would have showed itself by now–52 games into the season. If you accept that as fact (and I don’t know how you can’t) then you have two options.
1) You make a trade or deal and try and salvage the season while you still can.
or
2) You accept that the season is a dissapointment and move on to next year.
Now if the only deal that you can make will set the team back for years if it doesn’t work out then of course you don’t make it and you go with option 2. However, if you can get a player without having to give anything up that MAY save your season and, if it doesn’t, you can just move on when the year is done, then you ABSOLUTELY have to take a shot.
Again, if 2 years is all that will do it then don’t make the deal. If you can get Forsberg for the remainder of this year only, you have to make it.

Steven,
You seem to right on. Jagr needs to play with a European center to be dominate the way he can be. BUT I would NOT sign him for more than this year. The young kids are promising and if we are going to be competative for the future now is not the time to give up on them

I think he’s going to Philly.
