Live Blog – Rangers @ Devils Game 2
Series may be over if the Rangers can win tonight. Who wouldn’t like a two game lead coming home to MSG? Let’s get it on….
7:11 pm: Early penalty on Straka. Devils have the man up, let’s see if the Rangers PK can continue their stellar play.
7:14 pm: Good PK for the boys in blue. Never like to start the game a man down but the Rangers kept it together.
7:23 pm: Question of the day…how many Devils employees does it take to fix a board?
7:27 pm: Game ON!
7:31 pm: Good pressure by the Rangers to stat. Gomez leading the charge…shocker. Ryan Hollweg terrible turnover, this guy does not bring anything to this team.
7:34 pm: HENRIK!! Stops the two on one and the rebounds that followed. Bad decision by Tyutin that lead to that chance. Would have liked to see Avery finish that two on one from Gomez just before that though. Goal could have gone to either team there.
7:42 pm: Different feel to this first period than in Game 1. More chances for he Rangers, they are definitely the outright aggressors to start. No goals yet but definitely a more positive feel.
7:53 pm: Penalty called on the Rangers, Staal to the box. Devils have been putting the pressure on, Rangers need to get out of the period tied at zeros.
End of 1 st: Rangers opened up the game with high intensity, mainly Scotty Gomez generating the opportunities. Devils crept back in the second half of the period and will start the second on the PP. No score so far.
8:14 pm: Rangers start out the period with a solid PK. Gomez headed to the locker room, hopefully nothing serious.
8:20 pm: Gomez back on the ice and generates the two on one. The Rangers would be up three goals if they could finish an odd man rush. Gomez is absolutely dominating this series.
8:24 pm: High stick on Backman. That’s a four minute penalty, knocked two of Parise’s teeth out. That may be a suspension on Backman. Not good.
8:29 pm: Great save by Henrik off the deflection from Tyutins leg. Someone other than Callahan has to make a hit on someone in the slot.
8:31 pm: EXCELLENT PK! Four minutes of solid defense and some SH opportunities. Henrik continues to play out of his mind.
8:34 pm: Penalty on the Devils. Avery draws it on Zubrus. Let’s see if the PP can play up to the PK. First PP of the game for the Rangers.
8:37 pm: Little extra curricular activity after Marty makes the save. Shanny pushing and shoving with Colin White. Now Langenbrunner and Gomez. This is Rangers Devils hockey ladies and gents. Shanny and Gomez in the box with White and Langenbrunner. Rangers still a man up.
8:40 pm: Rozsival and Zubrus going at it after the Rangers PP ends. Looks like Zubrus is going to the box, Rangers get another two minutes with the man up.
8:42 pm: This is the only series where each team is happy to go on the PK, that’s where they get all their chances. Bad Rozsival turnover that led to a two on one.
8:49 pm: Devils picking up the intensity much like they did at the end of the first. Jagr looked like he got away with hook but I’m not complaining. Can’t let the Devils score a quick one before the end of the period…..These fights are just not stopping, every whistle to stop play starts a new fight..Dubi getting into it with Zubrus…got to love the kids intensity.
8:51 pm: How bout Henrik slapping Zubrus on the back of the head? Zubrus and Clarkson, Shanny and Dubi all get sent to the box. Second period shots and hits for each team are equal.
8:55 pm: Avery gets called for interference with Marty. TERRIBLE CALL! Another period where the Raners finish a man down. That call is made because it’s Marty, make no mistake about it.
End of 2nd: Fun period of hockey. Game got quite chippy, lot of penalties for both teams. Still no score. Rangers will start the third a man down.
9:15 pm: Another exceptional PK by the Rangers to start the third. A Let’s Go Rangers chant at The Rock, love to hear that.
9:18 pm: JAGR GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!! Marty made a great save on Backman but let’s one from Jagr go in. Rangers lead 1-0. Great hustle by Jagr to beat Colin White and confuse Marty.
9:20 pm: Avery GOAL!!!!!!!! That was quick. Great shot by Avery. Rangers lead 2-0. This game just went from Good to AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! I’m calling for all Ranger fans to do their best Avery fist pump celebration in honor of that goal.
9:23 pm: Chant at The Rock is MARTY! MARTY!
9:28 pm: Three on two for the Rangers, Colin White’s skate got in the way. Nice chance none the less.
9:33 pm: Hustle play by….Ryan Callahan of course. Nice try at the wrap around.
9:37 pm: Play is getting reviewed. No way that’s a goal. Great job by Hank to get his left pad kicked out to make that save. Wouldn’t have this problem if Hollweg could have cleared the puck in the first place.
9:41 pm: SCORE UPDATE: Washington and Alexander the Great come back from down 4-2 to win 5-4. A.O. is out of this world.
9:47 pm: Rangers 17 shots this period. Devils 8. Empty Net for NJ.
9:49 pm: Devils GOAL. This one is not over yet folks. Still 1:20 remaining. Hold the phone. Rangers lead 2-1.
9:51 pm: Rangers time out. Blueshirts are getting dominated on the face offs. Can’t keep letting the Devils gain control of the puck, have to milk the clock sometime.
9:52 pm: Penalty on the Devils. Langenbrunner goes to the box. Big break for the Rangers.
End of Regulation: Who said I was crazy when I said the Rangers would win in five. Maybe I was crazy, maybe I should have predicted a sweep. Rangers go into Jersey and take the first two of the series. Blueshirts get away with some close calls there at the end, especially that icing that the Devils are allowed to take with a man down. Also, that cross check went uncalled. But, a win is a win is a win is a win. GET READY FOR THE GARDEN! LETS GO RANGERS!

Eric! You’re out of the cold, dark basement! Good to hear from you again.
I like the effort so far, a second straight high-intensity start from NYR. This game, though, we can’t be as sloppy in the first period as we were on Wednesday.
Michael April 11th at 6:37 pm
Ryan Hollweg with the terrible turnover? OK, how about your boy Nigel Dawes with a bad turnover in the neutral zone that led to a good rush for NJD?
Better life in the arena tonight, Wednesday’s game didn’t really have a playoff atmosphere/environment as far as the crowd was concerned for much of the game.
Plebeian April 11th at 6:43 pm
Yeah, but at least Nigel Dawes pots more than one goal per season….just sayin
Eric Rothman April 11th at 6:44 pm
How bout Dawes with the put back that almost got by Marty. Let’s not talk about who brings more to this team, Hollweg or Dawes.
Michael April 11th at 6:49 pm
I’m not comparing who brings more to the team, of course it’s Dawes. Just pointing out that Dawes had a bad giveaway also, but of course Hollweg gets singled out individually for his.
Eric Rothman April 11th at 6:50 pm
Absolutely he get’s singled out because he shouldn’t be on the ice to make he mistake in the first place
Michael April 11th at 6:55 pm
Who are the alternatives? Orr is hurt, I know you don’t want Strudwick, and if you bring Prucha in on that line, we’d be the least physical team in the playoffs. Prucha not getting any PP time makes him a waste on that fourth line, because his offensive ability isn’t harnessed on a checking unit.
Terrific period for the King, he’s on top of his game.
Will April 11th at 7:00 pm
Hey Eric good to see you doing the blog again. Great Period for King Henrik. We need to find a way to make the Devils pay for being aggresive and need to get more physical. I can’t wait for the 2nd period. Hopefully, it will turn out like Wednesday.
Eric Rothman April 11th at 7:09 pm
I like Prucha on the fourth line over Hollweg, I’ve made that point on the show before. I think Hollweg’s physicality is an illusion. His inability to do anything overshadows any physicality that he may have. Put Prucha in.
Michael April 11th at 7:12 pm
You sound a lot like Steve now, Eric, I’m pretty sure you’ve advocated Hollweg/Orr over Prucha on the fourth line for a while now..
I can go back and listen to the podcasts, but I’m fairly confident about this one.
Have you not seen Hollweg’s hits in this game? He bangs bodies and is quicker than Prucha, in my opinion.
Oh well, either way, the fourth line isn’t what will win or lose this series, or this game. Let’s see if Gomez can get on the board this period.
balter16 April 11th at 7:14 pm
so much for a hi tech arena…they cant get anything right in NJ
Michael April 11th at 7:15 pm
Hahaha what do you mean, everyone loves the armpit of America!
Eric Rothman April 11th at 7:17 pm
Michael I have definitely advocated Orr, not Hollweg. I think Orr is a more all around player than Hollweg, he adds more on the defensive end.
Michael April 11th at 7:23 pm
OK, Orr, my apologies. I would definitely agree with that and your assessment of him over Hollweg.
Again, he’s not an option at the moment, as you know, and I don’t think we’ll see him in the next round either if we make it that far. If we play Montreal, which is likely, Orr’s lack of speed would definitely be exploited.
Michael April 11th at 7:25 pm
HUGE kill right now, especially if it’s 4 minutes.
Michael April 11th at 7:25 pm
He’s lucky he didn’t get another two for cross-checking, to be honest.
Michael April 11th at 7:31 pm
Still doesn’t make sense how we look more comfortable on the kill than we do on the man-up.
francesco April 11th at 7:32 pm
guys what a pk…….amazing the guys are hot tonight…..lets score lets score guys
scummy April 11th at 7:33 pm
Hell of a kill.
Michael April 11th at 7:34 pm
4-2 Flyers right now, Verizon Center is rocking for their home Caps though.
francesco April 11th at 7:36 pm
we got a pp…lets hope they dont score……little scare eheheheheheh
scummy April 11th at 7:36 pm
haha even Joe is commenting on Tyutin…Hes gotta pick it up.
Michael April 11th at 7:36 pm
Coincidence that ever since Tyutin got a new, longer-term contract, his play has tailed off? I don’t think so..
francesco April 11th at 7:38 pm
wake up folks they start fight…….its all about winning…..
scummy April 11th at 7:39 pm
Damn right Shanny… Gomez is the new Avery! hahaha
Michael April 11th at 7:40 pm
What was that, Dainius??
Michael April 11th at 7:41 pm
His mother didn’t teach him to talk like that..
francesco April 11th at 7:44 pm
2 vs 1 what a hell …….i was shaking…..
Michael April 11th at 7:45 pm
As long as we don’t score, we’re giving the Devils more and more hope that they can win this game. So much for taking more shots, Renney, we’re not generating much on net so far.
francesco April 11th at 7:49 pm
im agreee 1000% michael!
francesco April 11th at 7:53 pm
shanny…..you got to stay on the ice……it is the second penalty for fighting in 10 minutessss stay calm……use the brain…
Michael April 11th at 7:53 pm
Love the intensity, this is playoff hockey at its best.
Jags got away with a hook, so much for saying the Rangers don’t get any calls, whatever, don’t want to hear it.
Everyone’s going to get two each for roughing.
scummy April 11th at 7:54 pm
Duby woulda kicked Zubrus’ ass.
Michael April 11th at 7:57 pm
Bit of a soft interference call, I don’t think that gets made at MSG, but Avery did take an extra whack at Brodeur and fell on top of him. The NHL is big on protecting the goalies, so not too surprised with the penalty.
Eric Rothman April 11th at 8:00 pm
Michael you can’t agree with that call. Avery fell on him and if anything Marty instigated after that. I understand the goalies are protected but that shouldn’t make it right for guys like Marty to be the aggressor and still draw the penalty.
scummy April 11th at 8:03 pm
I want to see Marty the BORE Broduer get his teeth knocked out, Parise didnt deserve it, that moronic fool does. MARTY, MARTY, MARTY.
You’re 100% right eric, it’s almost like they look the other way with guys like Broduer.
Michael April 11th at 8:04 pm
I don’t agree with it personally, I just said it was pretty soft! I understand why it was made, that’s all I was saying, the referee had justification if he interprets the rules strictly enough.
It wouldn’t have been called at MSG.
As for Marty instigating it, yeah, maybe, by trash-talking with Avery, but he never made physical contact.
Like I said, for me, it’s not a penalty, but I can see why it was called.
Michael April 11th at 8:06 pm
They do give him the benefit of the doubt, and he’s earned that over the years. It’s the same with other star players in other sports though, so let’s not act too surprised.
Michael April 11th at 8:08 pm
Jim Hughson has the Penguins-Sens call on CBC, check it out during the intermission. GREAT play-by-play guy, best in North America as far as I’m concerned. 3-2 Pens.
Michael April 11th at 8:13 pm
Joe Micheletti is going to do it, he’s got trivia wrapped up. The fans..well..we’re not doing so well
scummy April 11th at 8:19 pm
YES. Jagr is cookin.
Michael April 11th at 8:20 pm
YES!!! In business now, 2-0!!!!!
scummy April 11th at 8:20 pm
SEANNY BOY! I LOVE IT.
Michael April 11th at 8:23 pm
Thanks, Sam, for telling us that it’s Rangers fans chanting “Maaarrty!”..if you ever want to hear the obvious, listen to Sam Rosen.
Michael April 11th at 8:24 pm
3-3 in Pittsburgh.
ferguson April 11th at 8:24 pm
a fortuitous attempt that was successful
Eric Rothman April 11th at 8:25 pm
Michael he’s there to tell the viewer what’s going on. If you think about it all a broadcaster does is state the obvious, hell your watching the game as he is telling you what’s going on. No need to hate on Sam.
scummy April 11th at 8:25 pm
Not only are they chanting Marty but I now hear obvious “lets go rangers” chants from the crowd. We’ve taken over “the rock”. It belongs to us.
Michael April 11th at 8:29 pm
Eric, there’s such a thing as oversaturation from a broadcaster, I can hear what’s going on for myself without him telling me. I can also understand for myself that it’s Rangers fans chanting that sarcastically, it wouldn’t make sense for Devils fans to say it.
Sam does a good job, he just needs to let the game breathe a little bit, particularly when the atmosphere is great like it is tonight.
Eric Rothman April 11th at 8:30 pm
Then put it on mute.
Michael April 11th at 8:32 pm
As we’ve talked about, and this is for another time, but that’s why I put other broadcasters around the league ahead of Sam. There are guys who let the game tell the story for itself without filling every moment with talk. Sam is not one of them. Sure, he’s fine, although he’s better doing NFL games.
Michael April 11th at 8:32 pm
How could I put it on mute, did you not read my comment???? The atmosphere tells the story, I don’t need Sam to do it for me. You have to be kidding me.
Michael April 11th at 8:33 pm
Cally almost surprised Marty again, that would’ve been great.
Michael April 11th at 8:36 pm
Why is this even being reviewed???? Waste of time.
Michael April 11th at 8:50 pm
Beautiful deflection by the Brett Favre lover..oh wait, that’s a different John Madden
Michael April 11th at 8:54 pm
Did we pay off these officials tonight???
Michael April 11th at 8:56 pm
3rd star-Gomez
2nd star-Avery
1st star-Lundqvist
scummy April 11th at 8:58 pm
Michael… Are you a Ranger fan or a Devil fan? Also, if you don’t like Sammy’s announcing watch it on MSG plus, Emerick and Chico seem to be more your style.
Michael April 11th at 9:01 pm
No, although Doc calls games beautifully, he suffocates the game more than Sam and is always talking…
Dumb question, of course I’m a Rangers fan, I just am more objective than many Rangers fans and don’t see things from a purely Rangers point of view all the time.
scummy April 11th at 9:05 pm
I see things from the objective perspective too… That shouldn’t have been a call on Langenbrunner and Betts should have been called. But understand that Sam is a renowned announcer and even more importantly he’s half of the announcing team that was there in ‘94. He could be talking through a voice box and I’d still love him, just for being Sam Rosen. Loyalty before honesty.
scummy April 11th at 9:07 pm
Also, I don’t know if you were trying to be sarcastic or not but that was not a beautiful defelection by any means. Even if you still think it is, the most boring team in the NHL was trying to deflect it past Hank ALL game, literally. It was bound to work at least once.
adampasz April 11th at 9:17 pm
Hey, don’t be dissin’ my man Sam.
Michael April 11th at 9:30 pm
I do understand that, I know that Sam has a lot of history with this team. All I’m saying is he’s not exactly my number one personal preference, his style doesn’t really attract me but again, just an opinion. I know that there are others who love the way he calls games and I respect that.
But no, I wasn’t being sarcastic, I thought that was a great deflection by Madden. He redirected a slap pass from a relatively long distance (as far as redirections and deflections go) and it beat Hank. Whether or not they were going to do it all game, which they were, and so were we, doesn’t matter. You can’t say it was ugly just because they hadn’t been working all game, you have to look at it individually.
Going back to Sam, understand, I think he’s a great guy and he and Joe have good chemistry in the booth. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of announcers I find far more irritating (Nashville’s, NYI’s, PIT’s, Colorado’s, etc.). Obviously I don’t think as highly of him as you all seem to do, but as I said, just an opinion.
scummy April 11th at 10:26 pm
Understandable, definatly understandable. I just don’t know how you can’t include the Devil’s announcers in your irritating list haha. They just make my ears bleed. I mean come on “He stops it with his paraphanalia”? WTF is that?
All aside though, awesome win.
Michael April 11th at 10:30 pm
Definitely, have to love being 2-0 up..even a split at MSG and this series is over, they’d have to win three in a row and that’s not gonna happen.
Richard S. April 12th at 2:43 am
Wow Michael, stating the obvious! just as bad as Sam! Once again, get over yourself!
Michael April 12th at 6:25 am
Hahahah Richard, you always know how to make me laugh; I’m sorry, I find you to be a funny, funny guy.
Not the same, what I said and what Sam does. Sam does it in the course of a game, and, to be honest, what I said isn’t even the obvious. The Devils could win three games in a row, I just don’t think they will.
Rangers fans chanting Marty’s name, though, is obvious, considering the fact that as the game was only on MSG, you would say that only Devils fans (likely watching the Devils telecasts) and Rangers fans were actually watching. As such, they all know who’s chanting Marty, we don’t need to be told!!!
Send me an e-mail, Richard, we’ll have a bit of a chat. Unitl then, YOU get over yourself.
Richard S. April 12th at 8:41 am
really? was the center ice feed by TSN? They don’t know who is watching or where they are watching from, if it is telecast all over the world or a feed picked up by chech tv or some south africa watching it 3 days later, they don’t know, so they call the game as if every person watching is a first timer. That is their job. you wanna talk send me an email richardstalker@hotmail.com
