Live Blog - Devils @ Rangers Game 4

Let me go out on a limb and say this game should be good. Forget who’s got the confidence coming into this one, the Rangers MUST WIN this game. You can not allow the first two wins of the series to go to waste. My pre-game first star…Sean Avery. He’s going to have a good one after the Avery Rule change. Game 4 STARTS NOW! LET’S PLAY HOCKEY!

7:11 pm: Girardi gets the first shot of the game. Off a Rangers face-off win, one aspect of the Rangers game that definitely needs improvement from Game 3.

7:16 pm: OH MY! Marty barely got a piece of that one. Great start by the Rangers…Gomez, Girardi, and Staal had great chances to take the first bite in this game.

7:20 pm: First shot all day by the Devils. Took them 7 minutes. Rangers doing a nice job of getting back quickly on defense.

7:24 pm: Penalty on Drury. He doesn’t agree, so therefore I don’t. Replay should be coming so I can make a more objective decision.

7:27 pm: Penalty now on the Devils. Great job by Backman and Drury to reset to waste time and let Henrik off the ice. 4 on 4 for a bit.

7:29 pm: GOMEZ PP GOAL!!!! Great job by Tyutin and Girardi to keep the puck in and a fantastic finish by Gomez. Rangers lead 1-0.

7:36 pm: Have to clear the puck quicker than that. Devils got a great shot off after they were able to keep a Rangers center ice clear in. Have to play smart.

7:39 pm: Dubi and Clarkson go in the box. 4 on 4.

7:41 pm: What an excellent series by Staal. Having a great game so far. 4 on 4 over.

End of 1: Great start for the Rangers. Take a 1-0 lead into the locker room. No chances for the Devils, defense a huge improvement from game 3. Got to keep it going for all three, but a nice way to start it off.

8:03 pm: Devils GOAL. Terrible way to start the second period. Rangers don’t get back quick enough and not picking up the open man. Tied 1-1.

8:07 pm: THATS HOW YOU RESPOND! DUBI to STRAKA…RANGERS GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way to execute the 2 on 1, the MSG crowd is right back in it. Rangers lead 2-1. I’m not to sure Dubi can be considered a rookie anymore, he’s playing like a guy who’s been there before.

8:10 pm: Coincidence that the goal came right after the Garden was blasting Bruce Springsteen????

8:12 pm: Rangers get called for to many men on the ice. Second PP for the Devils, on the first one the Rangers were able to draw a penalty of their own.

8:15 pm: Well that’s not what the Rangers wanted to do. Devils GOAL. Tied 2-2.

8:17 pm: Devils called for a high stick that drew blood on Rozi. Double minor coming up for the Rangers. 4 minutes of the PP.

8:22 pm: Two shots in four minutes. What a terrible job by the Rangers on the PP. No intensity, no movement, no shots.

8:23 pm: WHO NEEDS A PP? Rangers GOAL!!!!!!!!!!! Drury deflection off the shot by Tyutin. Rangers lead 3-2.

8:25 pm: Penalties upcoming. Looks like on both sides, more info when the commercials over. But it looks like Freddy Shoes for interference is one of the penalties. Brodeur called for diving. 4 on 4 hockey. I don’t get that penalty, Sjostrom got pushed into Marty, where’s he supposed to go?

8:28 pm: Refs completely missed a trip the took Gomez down. Not even close, atrocious no call. Now, to many men on the ice…what is going on?

8:33 pm: Excellent job by Avery to draw the trip on White. Just for good measure he got to plow Marty over with no consequence. Rangers on the PP.

8:35 pm: Marty is such a flopper. Play stopped because Marty was crying on the ice. Oduya and Jagr go into the box, Rangers still on the PP.

End of 2nd: Heart attack period. Rangers remain up by one, but not after the Devils put two by Henrik. Rangers lead 3-2. Nice chance for Dawes at the end of the period. Callahan has been getting lambasted with hits but he keeps coming and gets a great pass off to Nigel.

9:00 pm: Rangers start off another period poorly. Give away by Girardi right in front of Hank so he takes the penalty instead of allowing the goal.

9:03 pm: Nice PK by the Rangers but this team continues to shoot themselves in the foot when it comes to taking offsides.

9:05 pm: Devils GOAL. Tied 3-3. Hank loses his stick on a CLEAR SLASH and the Devils able to capitalize.

9:13 pm: Rangers have just gotten outplayed by the Devils in the first half of this period. The terrible calls by the refs haven’t helped but the Rangers need to step it up.

9:21 pm: Finally a good shift by the Rangers. Let’s see if they can swing the momentum and start working harder to win some loose pucks.

9:26 pm: How does Avery miss that??????????? Three quarters of the net wide open and he shoots it into Marty.

9:29 pm: STAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!! GOAALLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a fantastic game by Staal and he caps it with the go ahead goal. Rangers lead 4-3!

9:37 pm: EMPTY NETTER GOMEZ GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RANGERS WIN! RANGERS WIN! RANGERS WIN!  WHAT A GAME! RANGERS LEAD 3-1!

You just jinxed him, Eric. Way to go.

Michael April 16th at 6:06 pm

Wow, look at Ricky’s hair. Stylin’.

Eric Rothman April 16th at 6:11 pm

Haha I’m sure he’ll be okay even with the prediction.

Michael April 16th at 6:15 pm

Cagey start so far, both teams have come out a little nervous I think.

Foster April 16th at 6:17 pm

Thought we were gonna steal one there, pretty nice start to the game though

Richard S. April 16th at 6:17 pm

i love the “MARTY” cheer from the rafters!

Michael April 16th at 6:19 pm

Gotta love Callahan going to the net like that, make Marty think twice about playing high in the crease.

Richard S. April 16th at 6:21 pm

where are all the playoff beards? if im gonna grow one i think they should all grow em

Foster April 16th at 6:22 pm

Paul Mara has a nice one he’s growing out…Girardi and Cally are makin solid efforts too

Richard S. April 16th at 6:23 pm

And Strudwick still has his super gay playoff mustache

Michael April 16th at 6:25 pm

Hollweg got cross-checked two or three times behind the net, and then we get called for a soft hook?

Come on.

Michael April 16th at 6:29 pm

What was Jagr doing?? Did he not see that we were trying to rag the puck and eat time off the clock? Why shoot it into the zone like that, that did nothing!

I expect more from a veteran and the captain.

Foster April 16th at 6:30 pm

I agree, they had the right idea and then just seemed to give up on the idea

scummy April 16th at 6:31 pm

OH BABY!!!!!!!!! ITS A POWER PLAY GOAL!!!

Michael April 16th at 6:31 pm

There it is!! A PP goal!! Who knew we had a power play?

Foster April 16th at 6:32 pm

Great job keeping the puck in the zone, nice goal…now lets keep it up

Michael April 16th at 6:38 pm

Eric, I’m telling you, you jinxed Avery. He’s been invisible so far. Take back what you said!

Eric Rothman April 16th at 6:39 pm

haha ok. Player of the game Marty!

Foster April 16th at 6:46 pm

Good period…were puttin pucks on the net which is always nice to see

Michael April 16th at 6:48 pm

Good, that should fix it.

That feature VS does, which had Paul Martin tonight, is the most useless, ridiculous thing. What’s the point of that, it just takes away from the game. I don’t care what players wear off the ice or what shoes they go golfing in.

The NHL couldn’t get back on ESPN fast enough. The announcers on VS are fine, but the presentation is awful. When they used that behind the net camera, the scoreboard at the top completely cut off the top of the screen where the Rangers had the puck. Amateur.

Michael April 16th at 6:49 pm

Agreed, Foster. We came out to play, and now we’ve just got to keep up. We’ve been a good second period team, so all signs look positive.

Brendan S April 16th at 7:02 pm

I’m pretty happy with that first period. Hank wasn’t really tested much, but he was there when he had to be. All of the lines were rolling pretty well, too.

Michael April 16th at 7:05 pm

Oops, not what we had in mind to start the period.

Foster April 16th at 7:10 pm

Blown coverage by Straka leading to a Devil’s goal but then makes up for it with a goal of his own…can’t be too angry

Michael April 16th at 7:10 pm

Back in front, that was a tougher shot for Straka than one may think. He’s stepped up tonnight big-time.

Michael April 16th at 7:15 pm

Bruce Springsteen is great and all, Eric, but the only artist I want to hear is Neil Diamond and Sweet Caroline at the end of the game.

Michael April 16th at 7:17 pm

Gotta give credit to the Devils, fighting back from a goal down twice in the playoffs is tough.

Michael April 16th at 7:19 pm

Alright, here we go, let’s put the Devils behind again.

Michael April 16th at 7:21 pm

I don’t like that first PP unit. 5 left-handed shots gives us no balance and no real good one-time looks. I’d like to see Renney put a right-hander on that unit; he has three on this one.

Michael April 16th at 7:23 pm

Scratch that, I guess Mara was only on to start because Rozy was on the bench getting treated.

Foster April 16th at 7:23 pm

After a great PP in the first, they looked pretty terrible there

Foster April 16th at 7:25 pm

NICE goal there off a good shot by Tyutin…I guess he heard Steve and decided to show him up

Brendan S April 16th at 7:27 pm

Another 4 minute power play anyone? If this Sjostrom thing ends up going against the Rangers, I will be upset…

Michael April 16th at 7:28 pm

Hard to believe that was only Drury’s first of the series, he’s had a bigger impact than that.

Good to see Hollweg laying the lumber there.

Sjostrom’s battling hard in front of Marty.

All in all, gotta like this energy from the Rangers. Can’t keep allowing the Devils to tie it up though.

Michael April 16th at 7:30 pm

Also can’t give Elias this much freedom and space, he’s feeling it right now.

Michael April 16th at 7:37 pm

Give me a break, Marty!!! Whiner!!

Brendan S April 16th at 7:38 pm

Where’s the diving call on Brodeur?

Foster April 16th at 7:40 pm

Marty looks like he should be playing in the Serie A Italian league with all that diving

Eric Rothman April 16th at 7:40 pm

Exactly what I was asking Brendan. There was a three second delay on his reaction to getting hit.

Michael April 16th at 7:41 pm

Is it just me, or does anyone else not know when coincidental minors don’t affect manpower? There have been times when 5 on 5 turns into 4 on 4, or 4 on 4 turns into 3 on 3, and times when manpower stays the same for both teams…I’m confused haha

Brendan S April 16th at 7:42 pm

He even removed his helmet after falling. His helmet was still on, but you could clearly see him removing it to deliberately end the play.

Michael April 16th at 7:42 pm

Haha Foster, there’s more diving in the Premiership but I know what you mean..Italians and Brazilians, a lot of whom play in Serie A, are famous for flopping

Michael April 16th at 7:43 pm

Oh Eric, gotta get one in for your boy “Nigel” there haha, glad you guys are on a first-name basis these days.

Eric Rothman April 16th at 7:47 pm

Haha yes Michael had to get one in for Nigel. We talked and decided first names were best.

The People's Champ April 16th at 7:50 pm

Any so-called “analyst” who wants to tell the nation how “bush-league” Avery’s antics were last game, better be letting everyone know how bush-league Marty’s diving is. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!

Michael April 16th at 7:57 pm

My thoughts exactly. If it wasn’t Avery, no one would be so upset about this, and if it wasn’t Brodeur, he’d be lambasted for his flopping around.

Michael April 16th at 8:07 pm

That’s an absolute joke! No call on Avery and the Devils score..talk about a potential game-turner

Brendan S April 16th at 8:09 pm

I can’t believe this, unbelieveable. I would almost rather see Koharski or McCreary reffing

Michael April 16th at 8:11 pm

I love this commercial with Coach Knight…

Anyway, yeah, this is starting to border on ridiculous. The referees have been awful tonight.

scummy April 16th at 8:16 pm

I love the “these refs suck” chant. Surprised Sammy isn’t commenting on it, haha.

Michael April 16th at 8:17 pm

I thought Strader was going to use one of my favorite terms in sports when talking about the Devils and Rangers if they win tonight..

I thought for sure he was going to with the “commanding 3-1 series lead” but he left “commanding” out. It’s never anything else when it gets to 3-1, it’s always commanding.

Michael April 16th at 8:18 pm

Scummy, are you watching on MSG? I thought the game was only on VS?

Eric Rothman April 16th at 8:20 pm

It’s on MSG also

scummy April 16th at 8:20 pm

nope I’m watching it on msg… VS for me tonight is UFC for some reason… My father down in south carolina is watching it on VS. Strange cable networks.

Michael April 16th at 8:26 pm

Oh ok, gotcha, it’s on VS for me in VA..I was wondering why it seemed like no one had any idea what I was talking about when I was mentioning things about the broadcast tonight haha..

Well, this game has OT written all over it..I’d rather not let it get that far though

Michael April 16th at 8:28 pm

Wow, what a save.

scummy April 16th at 8:31 pm

B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!!!!!

Michael April 16th at 8:32 pm

Alright, great goal, but we’ve let them tie it three times in a row..we have to finish this one off!!!!

scummy April 16th at 8:33 pm

Mark Staal has Brian Leetch written all over him. He even looks like him.

Michael April 16th at 8:35 pm

I don’t think his offensive upside is as high, but you could be right, I hope you are.

Strange time for the Devils to call their timeout. In their own zone?? Hmm

scummy April 16th at 8:36 pm

Eric, you’re 5 game prophecy looks like its gonna come true…

Michael April 16th at 8:37 pm

I was just gonna say that, you’re looking like a genius right now, Eric.

scummy April 16th at 8:38 pm

OH BABY!!!!!

Eric Rothman April 16th at 8:40 pm

Thanks guys…it’s good to be right for once.

Michael April 16th at 8:40 pm

Pittsburgh finished off the sweep tonight. Look out for the Pens..

mckeever April 16th at 8:52 pm

these refs were terrible but a win is a win

Inferno April 17th at 11:48 am

a win does not make the reffing excusable though. If youre the Rangers management you have to nip this in the bud and tell the league why you are unhappy with the call so they talk to these refs. As the playoffs go on, we’ll get the knuckle heads more and more, last thing you want is a preventable situation (by saying something to Campbell) go unchecked by not saying anything at all.
