Live Blog - Rangers @ Pittsburgh Game 1

So, we didn’t create the Rangers Live Blog but we are continuing it. Rangers try to continue their post season success on the road tonight against the Pens. Folks, I’m nervous. I expect plenty of heart attacks during this series and I think it’s going to be a fun one. The quest for the cup continues. Let’s Go Rangers!

7:09 pm: Well Rangers are going to start a man down. Jagr gets called and is sent to the box. Oh Boy.

7:10 pm: Rangers are wearing white. Pens fans are wearing white. Hmm…opposite day at the Igloo?

7:13 pm: Well some scary chances for Pitt but no goal. Even strength, like to see the Rangers press offensively and slow up the Pens momentum.

7:16 pm: Tyutin with some criminal turnovers in the Rangers zone. This team can’t afford to have Tyutin play the way he did at the beginning of the Devils series.

7:18 pm: Rangers called for another penalty, on Backman. This game has started horribly, Pens have 8 shots - Rangers 0. Luckily the Rangers aren’t down a goal but you can’t keep giving this Pitt team chances.

7:23 pm: Hell of a PK for the Rangers. Almost got a SH goal at the end there. Need to turn that into some offensive momentum.

7:27 pm: Boys in blue look like they have their heads back on their shoulders. Got some nice pressure on the Pens defense but not to many shots got through to Fleury. But, the ones that did get to the net came out for long rebounds, let’s hope Fleury is drinking the same Kool-Aid Marty was in the Devils series.

7:30 pm: Ryan Whitney called for high sticking. Rangers on the PP. Time to quiet the crowd.

7:31 pm: DUBI GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s how you take advantage of the other teams mistake. Rangers lead 1-0.

7:37 pm: Rangers are being very physical on Crosby. I like that game plan, force him to adjust and feel uncomfortable.

7:38 pm: Hooking called on Sykora. Rangers go on their second PP of the night. Wouldn’t mind going into the locker room up two.

7:40 pm: Interference called on Shanny. 4 on 4 hockey for about a minute. I didn’t see the penalty but the camera angle was not great.

End of the 1st: Well the Rangers survive playing a bad opening 8 minutes to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room after one. Classic Rangers slow start but they were able to overcome it by killing off a couple of Pens PP and converting on one of their own. Can’t complain about the score.

8:00 pm: Goal has officially been given to Straka. Still 1-0.

8:03 pm: DRURY GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Might get overturned because Drury’s stick was pretty high. For now Rangers lead 2-0.

8:06 pm: GOAL COUNTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rangers lead 2-0. Tough call but Rangers get the benefit of the doubt. Great hand eye coordination by Drury to make the deflection. Fleury was six feet in the air trying to make that save.

8:09 pm: AVERY GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!! Rangers lead 3-0. You gotta be kidding me! Fists pumps of the world unite!

8:15 pm: Rangers doing a nice job winning face-offs. That’s an area they had trouble with against Jersey.

8:18 pm: This is why insurance goals are very important against the Pens. Looks like the goal went of Rozsival’s skate, credited to Ruutu.

8:19 pm: So much for the cushion. Goal by DuPuis. Rangers lead 3-2.

8:23 pm: Well let’s see if a penalty can slow this Pens momentum down. Rangers on the PP.

8:29 pm: PP can’t convert, although they had some nice chances. Backman shot one right into the chest of Fleury, Rangers remain in control with 6 minutes to play in the period.

8:34 pm: Sid the Kid draws the penalty on Dubi. Questionable call to say the least. Pens on the PP.

8:37 pm: Rangers kill of the PP with the help of some great saves by Hank. Got to make it out of this period alive.

End of 2nd: Whew! Well after dominating the first five minutes of this period the Rangers back peddled for the last fifteen. You never want to blow a 3-0 lead to anyone but it just goes to show you how powerful this Penguins offense is. Rangers still lead by one, so after all of that the score remains the same margin. Rangers lead 3-2.

9:00 pm: Here come the heart attacks.

9:04 pm: Pittsburgh goal. This game is tied. That play was allowed to happen because Tyutin decided not to hit someone and cause a disruption at the start. Game tied 3-3.

9:06 pm: You gotta be kidding me. Three on two break away right after they allow the tying goal. Sykora goal. Pens lead 4-3.

9:14 pm: BACK FROM THE DEAD! GOMEZ GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tied 4-4. OK, OK.

9:23 pm: Rangers have definitely stepped up their play after that Gomez goal. Just over four remaining, I don’t want this game to go to OT. I want a quick goal, I’m feeling a young gun like Callahan stepping up here at the end. Call me crazy.

9:27 pm: Rangers called for the penalty. Straka for interference. Oh boy.

9:30 pm: Well I didn’t mean that young gun. Crosby scores. Pens lead 5-4.

End of 3rd: Jagr had a chance to put one home there at the end, instead it goes off the post.  Disappointing loss.

Wow, Sidney has a little facial hair going there. That’s all he’s been able to grow in two weeks???

adampasz April 25th at 6:10 pm

I had a heart attack just watching the Morning Skate on rangers.nhl.com.

Michael April 25th at 6:11 pm

Did I miss something? The Penguins are wearing black, and the fans have a white-out going?

Come on people, let’s coordinate our colors here.

Michael April 25th at 6:11 pm

Silly early penalty. What was he doing?????

adampasz April 25th at 6:19 pm

Wow. Rangers look awful. Henrik is keeping them in it. Hopefully they’ll settle down.

scummy April 25th at 6:22 pm

Lets just make it through the first period.

Michael April 25th at 6:22 pm

Good call on the white-out, Eric. We’re on the same page there, it’s a little strange.

Rangers have weathered the early storm so far, we gotta kill this penalty coming up. No shots for us yet either, so any offense would be appreciated.

Does anyone else get the feeling that this Pittsburgh series is eerily similar to last year’s series against Buffalo? High-powered offense and the Rangers seem to have to play a near-perfect game to win.

scummy April 25th at 6:25 pm

way to kill it and almost score, lets see some sustained offense

Michael April 25th at 6:29 pm

I think you hit the nail on the head, Scummy, we need to make it through the first period tied or even up by a goal.

scummy April 25th at 6:32 pm

Lets put one home. Make that nice old ladie’s prediction true.

scummy April 25th at 6:33 pm

YEAH! Nice. Beautiful. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael April 25th at 6:33 pm

YES!!!

adampasz April 25th at 6:33 pm

Yes! Dubinsky is the Ranger who’s looked the most solid so far on offense.

Michael April 25th at 6:35 pm

Not sure that Dubinksy even touched it, I think that may have went in off the Penguins defenseman.

Oh well, a goal is a goal.

Michael April 25th at 6:35 pm

*Dubinsky

scummy April 25th at 6:43 pm

Crap call on Shanny… Yeah I think it was marty straka’s goal. Oh well a goal is in fact a goal.

scummy April 25th at 6:44 pm

Great period for the Rangers.

adampasz April 25th at 6:45 pm

Wow. Rangers played a very sloppy period. They are very fortunate to be up by a goal.

Michael April 25th at 6:46 pm

I think the referees have done a fantastic job tonight, to be honest..at the end of the period there, you could audibly hear the ref saying “Nothing there, nothing there” after a check, and “Watch your stick, Michal” after Rozy was thinking to slow down the Penguin player in the corner.

That’s great communication between players and officials and I hope it keeps up.

As you said though, great period for the Rangers. We absolutely stole that period away and hopefully we can keep it up.

Michael April 25th at 6:47 pm

Yeah, Adam, I agree, I mean it was a sloppy period as far as the Rangers go, but it was great in the sense that we were outplayed and still are leading 1-0.

Nick April 25th at 6:55 pm

They started to play a little better towards the end of the period. Still nervous though.

adampasz April 25th at 6:58 pm

There were some positive signs for the Rangers, for sure. And I think it was a well-coached period by Renney. But they need to get it going, and fast. A 1-goal against the Penguins is next to meaningless.

scummy April 25th at 7:06 pm

I dunno… Doesn’t look like a goal to me.

Michael April 25th at 7:07 pm

Hmm, Drury’s stick looked a bit high..don’t think it’ll count

scummy April 25th at 7:07 pm

After that review… Its gotta be

adampasz April 25th at 7:07 pm

The stick was below Drury’s shoulders when it hit the puck. I think this is a goal. Kovalev had a very similar goal last night, though he was closer to the net.

Michael April 25th at 7:08 pm

WOW. 2-0!!

scummy April 25th at 7:08 pm

YES!!!

Nick April 25th at 7:08 pm

We got a call, I don’t know if that was a legit.

Michael April 25th at 7:09 pm

Adam, doesn’t matter about shoulders, it’s whether or not the stick was above the crossbar. Shoulders is when you knock a puck out of the air like when it’s popped up — stick above the shoulder.

Whatever, big lead for us now.

scummy April 25th at 7:10 pm

YES!!!! Oh MAN!!!

Nick April 25th at 7:12 pm

Fleury=Swiss Cheese

Brendan S April 25th at 7:12 pm

OH

BABY

adampasz April 25th at 7:12 pm

Yes, I know the shoulder doesn’t matter, but — since it’s so far from the net — that’s the only reference point in this situation to figure out what 4 feet is.

From the replay, it looked like the stick started above his shoulders, but then quickly came downward, and made contact below the shoulders.

Michael April 25th at 7:19 pm

Hmm, yeah, good point. I mean it was SO close either way. We’ll take the goal though haha.

There is no way that Orr should fight Laraque..I don’t care what BGL says to goad Orr into it, but you can’t afford a change in momentum like PIT would get if BGL wins.

scummy April 25th at 7:20 pm

Damn.

Michael April 25th at 7:20 pm

Thanks for the jinx, Beninati.

Michael April 25th at 7:21 pm

Wow.

scummy April 25th at 7:21 pm

Compose yourselves Rangers.

scummy April 25th at 7:24 pm

Let’s convert here boys.

Michael April 25th at 7:25 pm

I would’ve called a TO, baby!

At least we’ve got a PP coming up, we need to silence the crowd here.

scummy April 25th at 7:42 pm

We made it though the period. Lets hope we bring the fire in the 3rd.

adampasz April 25th at 7:44 pm

That period was more like what I expected. Rangers played a lot better. Unfortunately, so did the Pengos.

3-goal leads are notoriously tricky to maintain early in the game. At least the Rangers kept their composure…

Michael April 25th at 8:07 pm

TIMEOUT, RIGHT NOW!!!

scummy April 25th at 8:07 pm

So much for that third period fire.

scummy April 25th at 8:16 pm

Whew. Thank you scotty gomez, thank you.

Michael April 25th at 8:19 pm

Next goal wins this game, it’s that simple.

scummy April 25th at 8:31 pm

Still 2 mins… still 2 mins.

scummy April 25th at 8:37 pm

Devestating.

Michael April 25th at 8:38 pm

They didn’t win that game, we lost it. Again, plain and simple.

Michael April 25th at 8:38 pm

We flat out lost that hockey game.

Gotta recover for the next one, or else this series is over.

scummy April 25th at 8:38 pm

Absolutely. We beat ourselves.

Henry April 25th at 9:29 pm

Nice call by the refs with THREE MINUTES LEFT!!! Tough to play the penguins and the refs…Totally bogus…
