Live Blog - Penguins @ Rangers Game 3

How are we feeling folks? Rejuvenated? Loose? Petrified? Comatose? I’m alive and ready to go and I believe the Rangers are as well. As reported by our very own Steve Gelbs earlier today, Hollweg returns while Prucha sits. Hey, at least it’s not Malik and Strudwick. No matter who’s in the line up this team needs a win. This is a new series , one that starts tonight at MSG. With a win by the Rangers, it’s anyones ballgame. LET’S GET EXCITED! Rangers fans, Game 3 starts right now…

6:55 pm: Rangers fans holding signs that say “Nice Dive - 8.7″ Must have been the French judges who gave such a low score to Sid.

7:11 pm: Well talk about falling asleep at the wheel from the very beginning. Penguins GOAL. Marian Hossa. Disgusting.

7:13 pm: Shocking that play started when Rozsival tried to go cross ice to Jagr?

7:17 pm: STRAKA! Wide open net can’t finish. Jagr headed to the penalty box along with Hossa. 4 on 4.

7:23 pm: Marc Staal just laid out his brother Jordan. Oh, brotherly love. Rangers are starting to get some great pressure on Fleury but he has made some excellent saves.

7:30 pm: Nice little run by Nigel and Drury. Got to have that line produce on some level tonight.

7:33 pm: THAT’S A GOAL! It will be reviewed after the brawl is over THAT WAS IN! Hit Fleury’s pad while it was in the net, no question.

7:38 pm: Straka GOALLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! New game folks, game tied 1-1. Jagr, Mara, and Dubi celebrate in the penalty box. Can’t doubt the Rangers intensity for this one. LETS GO!

7:43 pm: Defense anyone? Tyutin just watches Laraque put one behind Hank. Pens lead 2-1. Add on top of that the Pens now get a 4 minute PP.

7:46 pm: Well this team really knows how to kill a good feeling. Malkin from the point on the PP. Pens lead 3-1. Unreal.

End of 1st: Rangers down 3-1.

8:11 pm: Rangers start this period well, now they get a chance on the PP. Sykora for holding.

8:13 pm: Jagr draws another penalty. Rangers on the 5 on 3. MUST SCORE. Let me repeat. MUST SCORE.

8:16 pm: How many penalties does it take for the Rangers to score a goal. Another 5 on 3 opportunity. Come On.

8:19 pm: Well even with 9 hours on the PP the Rangers can’t put one in. Unbelievable. On top of that Drury heads to the locker room injured. It just get’s better.

8:29 pm: OK OK OK! Callahan GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s a start. Pens still lead 3-2. Great play by Gomez, must have seen Steve’s comment.

8:31 pm: OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN!!!!!!!!!!! JAGR GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TIE GAME.

8:37 pm: This is nuts, the Rangers are a completely different team this period. Off the crossbar, off the top of the net, off the post. Intense.

8:39 pm: Ryan Hollweg called for a penalty. Can’t let up, let’s get a short handed goal.

8:40 pm: Rangers were just out on the ice too long. Malkin scores, Pens lead 4-3. All Hollweg there, you can’t take that penalty and kill your teams momentum like that.

End of 2nd: Well there you see the perfect example of a great period being ruined by a stupid mistake. Rangers make up the 2 goal deficit and Ryan Hollweg immediately wipes it out by taking an inexcusable boarding penalty. You can’t let the Pens have a PP. But, the Rangers are still only down one and proved this period that they can score in bunches. One period, two goals to win.

9:06 pm: Instead of coming out intense, Rangers come out flat and suffer. Pens lead 5-3.

9:08 pm: Betts injured and out for the rest of the game.

9:12 pm: Rangers go on the PP. If there is a time for a comeback, this is it.

9:17 pm: Rangers are a mere 2 for 22 on the PP this series. It’s a real exercise in futility with this PP unit. Period’s almost half over and Rangers are giving no sign of a run.

9:20 pm: Another penalty upcoming on the Pens. Rangers should decline this one.

9:33 pm: This team is ready for a summer tee-time folks. You would think down two goals with the season on the line, the Rangers would play with some intensity….not the case.

9:35 pm: Steve mentioned in the comment section but we are doing a show right after the game ends. Any questions or comments you want us to discuss shoot us an email at hosts@nyrangerscast.com

End of Regulation: Ugh. Rangers fall 5-3.  Trail the series 3-0.  Make sure to catch Steve and I’s thoughts on tonights podcast.

No reason to be nervous or anything, only the whole season is riding on a Rangers win tonight..

greg April 29th at 5:53 pm

THIS IS HOCKEY!!! WOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marc April 29th at 5:57 pm

I think I’m gonna be sick!

Eric Rothman April 29th at 5:58 pm

Take some Tums Marc, you gotta make it through this.

Marc April 29th at 6:01 pm

You wanna know the worst thing… the worst thing… I normally work in the evening… every time I watch live, we lose… can’t do it… game 3 Devs, I was watching live… turned on game game 1 with Pitts after the 1st period, we collapse… so I’m working.

DVR is in full effect, I’ll be watching it at 1am when I get home…

Marc April 29th at 6:04 pm

so I’m off… good luck Rangers fans, looking forward to commenting and hearing the next podcast guys…

“we will win tonight”

Michael April 29th at 6:13 pm

GREAT start…

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 6:14 pm

Another case of Rozsi trying to be too fancy. GET THE PUCK IN DEEP!

luke April 29th at 6:14 pm

they are too good

Michael April 29th at 6:17 pm

GIVE ME A BREAK!! The puck bounced over Jagr’s stick, that wasn’t Rozy’s fault or anyone else’s, it was the poor ice in the spring at MSG..

Get the puck in deep?? That’s exactly what you criticized the Rangers for doing last game, generating nothing on the attack..dumping and chasing doesn’t help you score goals, it’s good for killing games off.

luke April 29th at 6:19 pm

cant even score on an open net!!!!

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 6:19 pm

Michael, you’re not listening to these podcasts if you think I don’t want them to dump the puck in. I said I don’t want one guy chasing. Get that puck in and pressure!

Marc April 29th at 6:19 pm

now I really am gonna be sick… laters guys…

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 6:21 pm

Looks like Hossa’s learned a thing or two from Crosby.

Michael April 29th at 6:21 pm

My favorite call, they both get penalties..come on

luke April 29th at 6:22 pm

SHOOT GOMEZ!!! SHOOT!!!!!

Michael April 29th at 6:22 pm

These player profiles are useless..

luke April 29th at 6:24 pm

I WANNA SEE CROSBY GET NAILED!!!!

greg April 29th at 6:25 pm

girardi… you better wake up

Michael April 29th at 6:26 pm

Never understood why Marc and Jordan don’t square off in a regular season game, I have no idea why they haven’t yet. If my brother and I played on opposing teams, we definitely would, and we’re best friends.

Come on guys, I want to see you drop the gloves!

greg April 29th at 6:30 pm

fleury is such a b*tch, he does his gay little glove save exaggeration every time. he didnt even need to move his glvoe to stop jagr, but did.

Michael April 29th at 6:30 pm

As the replay showed, Tyutin is showing his poor judgement and lack of focus again.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 6:34 pm

The Rangers are certainly playing aggresively, but I still think they’re giving up a LITTLE too much. One of these chances is going to come back and bite them in the rear.

Michael April 29th at 6:38 pm

Again with the Nigel, Eric..I need to get on a first-name basis with some of these Rangers like you.

luke April 29th at 6:40 pm

YES!!!!!

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 6:40 pm

Jagr has to come back next season. He’s been the definition of a “captain” tonight!

luke April 29th at 6:40 pm

GOAL!!!!!!

Eric Rothman April 29th at 6:40 pm

He’s like a soccer player. One name. Just, Nigel.

Michael April 29th at 6:43 pm

Hahahaha yeah, makes sense. Who am I to queston that?

Avery has been almost invisible this whole series; we really need him to step up and chip him more offensively. The agitator supremo that he is isn’t working against the Pens like it did against Atlanta last year and the Devils this season, so we need him to put some points on the board.

greg April 29th at 6:43 pm

Therrien’s face being bright red… It reminds me of that guy who died in Dumb and Dumber because of those peppers. haha

Michael April 29th at 6:45 pm

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? BGL????

Michael April 29th at 6:45 pm

Way to go, Toots. You let the heavyweight champ of the NHL score a goal in the playoffs.

Michael April 29th at 6:48 pm

That is a PP quarterback right there, Sergei Gonchar is a top quality offensive defenseman..great way to finish the period for the Rangers.

luke April 29th at 6:50 pm

WELL, THIS GAME IS OVER, AND SO IS THE SEASON

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 6:51 pm

Sometimes sports aren’t fair. That period was just unfair.

Michael April 29th at 6:51 pm

Gotta give credit to the Penguins, a young, inexperienced team coming into this hostile environment and walking out of the first period with a dominating 3-1 lead..very impressed with their fearlessness, I have to say.

Pathetic first 20 minutes from NYR.

Michael April 29th at 6:52 pm

How was that period unfair, Steve? We had more shots, but they were lower quality shots and Pittsburgh walked all over us and capitalized on our mistakes..

You can’t say we outplayed them one bit..

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 6:55 pm

Shocker, but I completely disagree with you Michael. The Rangers definitely outplayed the Pens there for most of the period, but a couple mistakes here and there and it’s a 3-1 game.

Again I have to say, if you think that period should have been 3-1 Pens, I don’t know what game you’re watching.

Nick April 29th at 6:55 pm

It’s all over now, baby blue

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 6:56 pm

And can we stop with the “season’s over” talk. We’ve got two more periods to see what this team is made of. Don’t give up yet.

greg April 29th at 6:58 pm

Ron Duguay is so annoying.

Teresa April 29th at 6:58 pm

Well that was upsetting. Seemingly doing what we needed to, not capitalizing, and now down 3-1. I agree Steve, let’s see what this team is made of. Go Jagr!

Michael April 29th at 6:59 pm

I don’t think it should be 3-1 them based on the balance of play, but they had the better of the period and we were careless with the puck a couple times and took a dumb penalty with Callahan in the offensive zone. Give them the smallest chance and they will make you pay, and that’s what they did.

I agree that the season is not over yet. If we don’t come back and win today, then it is, but 40 minutes is more than enough time to turn it around like Gomer said in the intermission.

Michael April 29th at 7:00 pm

I said “dominating” 3-1 lead because let’s face it, a two-goal lead in the playoffs is generally game over. They didn’t dominate us in the period, but they did play a smarter game than we did and took advantage of our mistakes.

Michael April 29th at 7:01 pm

And it was a pathetic performance on our end, aside from Jagr and Straka. Way too careless, way too sloppy, not smart enough. Can’t do that against this team.

Eric Rothman April 29th at 7:02 pm

I got to take a stance right in between Michael and Steve. I was not impressed with the Rangers as a whole that period. They had some nice rushes but, as Michael said you can’t have those lapses in judgment like they seem to always have in this series. But I do agree with Steve that it could just as easily been 3-1 Rangers. Not over yet though.

Michael April 29th at 7:05 pm

Definitely not, and we NEED to score the next goal in this game. It’s an absolute must to make it 3-2 instead of going down 4-1..

Prediction? Gomez comes up with a rebound in front and jams it past Fleury to cut the deficit in half.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 7:13 pm

The Rangers absolutely HAVE TO score on this power play. They need to be as scary with the man advantage as Pittsburgh.

luke April 29th at 7:14 pm

COMPLETLEY AGREE STEVE, GOT TO, GOT TO, GOT TO SCORE HERE

Michael April 29th at 7:15 pm

Perry Pearn is useless as an assistant coach..he does NOTHING..

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 7:15 pm

:43 second 5 on 3. Might not be a stretch to say this is the turning point in the game.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 7:17 pm

Can’t say I’m suprised by that showing.

Michael April 29th at 7:18 pm

Here comes another chance, let’s go!!

luke April 29th at 7:19 pm

PITTSBURGH IS PRETTY MUCH GIVING THE GAME AWAY HERE WITH ALL THESE PENATLY’S

luke April 29th at 7:20 pm

THE PROBLEM IS WE CANT SCORE!!!

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 7:21 pm

Watching this power play actually makes me physically ill.

Michael April 29th at 7:23 pm

Woeful, just woeful.

Great job coaching ‘em up, Perry. At least Trautwig likes your ties, so you’re good for something.

Nick April 29th at 7:24 pm

Ugh, Jagr and Shanny are like the only people who ever touch the puck on a 5 on 3.

Drury is hurt, damn.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 7:26 pm

Jagr is like a man possessed out there. Gomez is very off tonight.

balter16 April 29th at 7:27 pm

we can not get one bounce our way…not one single bounce our way….anyone else see how bad gomez is playing? how bad cally and dawes are playing?? things are not right

Michael April 29th at 7:27 pm

Too bad Jagr’s energy and passion has been matched by no Ranger player except for maybe Straka..

I expected so much more from this team playing at MSG, I really did.

balter16 April 29th at 7:30 pm

thank you gomer….he made a great play

Nick April 29th at 7:30 pm

Awesome play by Gomez there.

Michael April 29th at 7:31 pm

I knew Gomer would come through, I called it before the period started..good finish by Cally, right back in it.

luke April 29th at 7:31 pm

GOAL! THANK YOU GOD! OKAY BOYS ONLY TWO MORE FOR THE LEAD

Michael April 29th at 7:32 pm

Never mind two more, let’s just get one more first and go from there..

luke April 29th at 7:33 pm

YES!! YES!!! YESSSSS!!!! THANK YOU JARG!! NEW GAME BOYS!!

Henry April 29th at 7:33 pm

JJJJJJJJJJJJJAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!

Nick April 29th at 7:33 pm

YEAH JAGR! Best player on the ice and it’s not even close.

Michael April 29th at 7:34 pm

Yeah, Gomez has been great in this period..not sure what Balter and Steve were talking about saying he was off in the first period, he was fine.

Jagr is on a mission right now.

Michael April 29th at 7:38 pm

Wow, we are DOMINATING this period!!!

Dumb penalty from Hollweg there, we have to kill this to keep up the big ‘mo!

Brendan S April 29th at 7:38 pm

Thanks, Ryan Hollweg…thanks

greg April 29th at 7:38 pm

Hollweg…….

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 7:39 pm

And that right there is why Hollweg cannot be in the lineup. He can’t help but take stupid penalties at inopportune times. He avoided in in the Devils series, but that right there was the Hollywood we know and love (or hate).

luke April 29th at 7:39 pm

IM GONNA KEEP MY EYES CLOSED AND PRAY OVER THE NEXT TWO MINUTES.

Michael April 29th at 7:40 pm

Grudingly, I have to agree with you Steve..

luke April 29th at 7:42 pm

CAN LUNDQVIST STOP ANYTHING TONIGHT

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 7:43 pm

Hollweg should not get another minute in a Rangers uniform. This guy is a disgrace!

Michael April 29th at 7:43 pm

A seeing-eye goal..it’s a Johnny Damon grounder through the hole

Nick April 29th at 7:43 pm

That’s not on Lundqvist at all Luke.

Michael April 29th at 7:44 pm

Can’t put that goal squarely on Hollweg though, the Rangers had several chances to clear the puck and couldn’t do it.

Brendan S April 29th at 7:44 pm

That’s what happens when Drury and Betts are gone

Michael April 29th at 7:45 pm

Agreed, Eric. The Rangers were dead tired because they couldn’t clear the puck, so I can’t put all the blame on Hollweg, I think the Rangers really needed to do a better job of getting it out.

luke April 29th at 7:45 pm

UM JUST PISSED, GOTTA TAKE IT OUT ON SOMEONE, I GOT NOTHING BUT LOVE FOR HENRIK, IM JUST PISSED OFF NICK

Michael April 29th at 7:46 pm

And also agreed, you can’t take that silly penalty in that situation, it killed our momentum..still, we could’ve gotten the puck out of the zone and actually killed a powerplay for once.

Michael April 29th at 7:50 pm

Great playoff beard there, Sid.

Teresa April 29th at 7:54 pm

Wow, that period took the life out of me. Elated one minute, destroyed the next. If anything they proved they could get 2 to tie it up. Now they need 2 to win.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 8:04 pm

Garden seems dead right now. Hollywood really killed this team.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 8:09 pm

And now you can say “Season’s Over.”

And I’m putting this one 100% on Ryan Hollweg. Yes it’s only one goal, but it’s really so much more. He killed everything the Rangers had going.

Michael April 29th at 8:09 pm

Awful goal to give up, poor job by Backman to not do anything, and Lundqvist should’ve had that one.

Michael April 29th at 8:10 pm

No, season is NOT over!!! We just saw NYR come back from two goals out of nowhere in the second period, and you’re gonna throw in the towel now?? Please.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 8:12 pm

Sorry Michael, I sensed it when Hollweg took the penalty. It takes an awful lot to come back like the Rangers did. To have all that momentum killed by a fringe AHLer is more than a team can take. I hope I’m wrong, but I just can’t see a comeback.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 8:12 pm

And on another note, Drury can’t be on the ice. He can’t move.

Teresa April 29th at 8:13 pm

I feel a bit sick now, especially watching Drury. He looks like he is in so much pain.

Michael April 29th at 8:14 pm

OK, here we go, time to get a goal and get back in this one..let’s see what we’re made of.

Michael April 29th at 8:15 pm

I’m surprised, Steve, usually I’m the glass half-empty, negative one and you’re the optimist. I think we’ve got another comeback in store here..

mckeever April 29th at 8:16 pm

hollweg should give up hockey and take up knitting……..tool

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 8:17 pm

I’m a realist and right now there’s no atmosphere in the Garden and the Rangers (aside from Jagr) look absolutely spent.

Michael April 29th at 8:18 pm

Seriously though, what is Perry Pearn’s job?? I’m not joking anymore; he is absolutely USELESS as an assistant

Michael April 29th at 8:20 pm

You’re right about the atmosphere, Steve, and although I can’t say I’m surprised and I can’t say I don’t understand it, I’m still disappointed by it. This game is the Rangers’ season, and yet the crowd is giving them nothing to feed off. MSG has to pick it up..

Henry April 29th at 8:21 pm

Does Backman do anything besides stand around and take penalties, If I were GM, absolutley no way he’d play in a Rangers uniform again.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 8:22 pm

How can you blame MSG? They’ve been with them all game, but they’re spent at this point. Honestly, I’m spent at this point. The joke of a hockey player that wears number 44 for this team KILLED and I mean KILLED this team’s season.

That’s the bottom line.

Teresa April 29th at 8:22 pm

Can we decline the penalty?

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 8:23 pm

Wish we could Teresa because this is truly a disgrace.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 8:25 pm

Eric, I think there was a bit of a typo there. 20 for 22 on the PP would be pretty darn good!

Eric Rothman April 29th at 8:26 pm

haha thank you Steve.

Inferno April 29th at 8:27 pm

This series was lost by Ryan Hollweg. End of story.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 8:27 pm

That’s what I’m here for.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 8:27 pm

100% correct Inferno

greg April 29th at 8:28 pm

i guess the rangers forgot this was their season. They gave up 1 game and 20 minutes too early

Michael April 29th at 8:28 pm

If Perry Pearn fell off the face of the earth tonight, I wouldn’t be sad at all..

I’m not blaming MSG, believe me, I’m just disappointed. I’m seeing some empty seats in the lower bowl around center ice, I’m not hearing much encouragement..I dunno about you, but hearing boos at home doesn’t really motivate me, it just puts me in more of a funk..

I dunno, I just think the crowd could do a little bit more right now to help out.

Teresa April 29th at 8:29 pm

Look guys, my brother is a huge Penguin fan, as I was until Jagr was traded. He is not talking to me now that I have completely gone to the Ranger side no matter where Jagr is next year. The Penguins can not sweep by the Rangers. For the love of God, SCORE!

Michael April 29th at 8:32 pm

It’s interesting that for as much as I hear that MSG is such a great home-ice advantage for the Rangers, they’ll be 1-2 there after this game in the playoffs this year and were knocked out at home last year by Buffalo…

Inferno April 29th at 8:33 pm

i sent you an email Steven and Eric, Id love for you gusy to talk aobut it in tonights/tomorrows podcast.

Steven Gelbs April 29th at 8:34 pm

We’re doing an episode right after the final horn sounds. We’ll get to the email. Anybody else that wants to be heard, get in your thoughts asap.

luke April 29th at 8:35 pm

we are done!! just another huge letdown by a new york team.

Michael April 29th at 8:36 pm

Here comes the expert strategy worked up by Pelino and Renney..expert..

Michael April 29th at 8:37 pm

How ’bout them Yankees though, Steve and Eric? At least you have the whole summer to look forward to..

How’s A-Rod’s quad?

Inferno April 29th at 8:39 pm

Phil Hughes has let me down a bit, but I have absolute faith in the kid. Hed have to go 0-30 for me to give up on him.

Michael April 29th at 8:41 pm

Haha and even then, Cashman wouldn’t put Joba in the rotation. I don’t think he should though, Joba is dynamite in the 8th.

greg April 29th at 8:49 pm

If Hollweg dresses next game… Im gonna run to MSG and punch Renney in the face.

Inferno April 29th at 8:58 pm

Last year, I was pretty OK after the Drury goal against us. Right now I feel like I am unable to process human emotion. This is so much worse because we lost because of our own player (Ryan Hollweg) not because of a herculean effort by the other team.

Marc April 30th at 2:38 am

well, leave it to what will probably be one of our last games of the season to shine a bright light on our problems.

Here’s two that are obvious… firstly, Ryan Hollweg. Why? Why? Why? Does he have incriminating pics of management? What, why, how, does this happen?

Secondly, why can’t Henrik Lundqvist find his game when we need him too. Im sorry, this has not been a good season for Lundy. He’s been very good, he’s been very bad. He was just okay against the Devils, he was great in game two with Pitts, tonight we face the hangman and he can’t find a puck.

This was not the guy I watched win a Gold Medal for his country. I’m very disappointed in him. Goaltenders who win cups do extraordinary things, they stand on their heads, they are Supermen, Henrik hasn’t looked close to any of those things.

Positives… Jagr, Dubinsky, Straka, Callahan, Gomez… they want to win… I’ll take that.

One win at a time…

Marc
