Rangers Agree to Terms with Fritsche

The Rangers avoided arbitration today by agreeing to a contract with newly acquired center Dan Fritsche.  Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Clearly the Rangers think 23 year old fits in somewhere on this team. Where that is, is anybody’s guess.  I will say this though.  If I was Blair Betts, I’d be sweating a little bit.

No doubt about it, you’re right about Betts. I could see a situation where the two are swapped in and out for each other based on the opponent and whoever’s playing better at the time. Betts is a useful player for late in the season when games get tighter and against divisional opponents, not to mention he’s the best penalty killer on the team, but Fritsche packs more of an offensive punch and can contribute there where Betts can’t.

Also, though, don’t discount the possibility of Drury playing on the wing more often than he does center. This would move Dubinsky up presumably from the third line to the second line, allowing Fritsche to center the third line (where he’s better suited), and Betts (a favorite of Tom Renney) to center the fourth line.

With all of the moves the Rangers have made this off-season, I still think this group of forwards will need to concentrate a little more on playing two ways to help out a defense corps that is largely offensive-minded, and that works in Betts’ favor.

Fritsche is a better winger than a center. he sucks at faceoffs, and has been playing mostly wing the past few years.

Blair betts doesnt have to worry. Lauri Korpikoski is the one who has to worry. Me thinks Fritsche is going to take his job this year :(

The Rangers already have plenty of 3rd and 4th line wingers — Fritsche will likely be playing center on this team.
