Dawes Coming Back

Well, those of you who have been listening to the show for a while know my admiration for Nigel Dawes.  So you can imagine the joy I am feeling right now.

Nigel Dawes will remain a Ranger for another year.  Dawes was a restricted free agent and the Rangers have locked him up for 2008-2009.  The price is $587,500 for the season.

In my mind this is quite a bargain…maybe thats just because I would have been OK with paying him $15-20 million (only kidding folks).

If Nigel playes well this season, he may be the recipient of a Girardi/Tyutin-like mid-season extension, which I am fine with.

Nigel is a solid player, who is still young and really fits the mold of what the Rangers have been aiming towards this offseason.

Let’s just anoint “Nigel” as the next Gretzky haha..

Only giving you a hard time, Eric. I think is a bargain for the Rangers, but as you said, if he does what he’s capable of doing, they’ll be paying him a lot more money in years to come.

Michael…he’s not The Great One quite yet haha

But I really think the Rangers are setting themselves up nicely with this contract.

By paying him less now, they can get away with a mid-season extension of say 4 years 11 million because the pay raise would be so high, even though in actuality it’s not a lot at all.

It’s comparable to what you’re seeing in baseball with up-and-coming stars, like Tulowitzki, Longoria, and Ramirez. Teams are willing to take a hit in the short term to lock up their players long term and not have to pay them as much as they’d have to if they were trying to re-sign them as unrestricted free agents.

You’re right, it’s a good deal for both parties, and I think Dawes knows the Rangers will likely make a better offer during the year.
