Teams are willing to take a hit in the short term to lock up their players long term and not have to pay them as much as they&#039;d have to if they were trying to re-sign them as unrestricted free agents.

You&#039;re right, it&#039;s a good deal for both parties, and I think Dawes knows the Rangers will likely make a better offer during the year.</description>

But I really think the Rangers are setting themselves up nicely with this contract. 

By paying him less now, they can get away with a mid-season extension of say 4 years 11 million because the pay raise would be so high, even though in actuality it&#039;s not a lot at all.</description>
