Live Blog – Game 5: Devils @ Rangers
PRE-GAME: The Rangers and Devils renew their rivalry tonight. Neither team has lost a game yet with the Rangers 4-0 and the Devils 2-0 to start the year.
Dan Fritsche gets his first start tonight in place of Patrick Rissmiller on the third line.
As everybody’s probably already read, Rangers top prospect Alexei Cherepanov died at the age of 19 today. There is a blog entry below if you would like to comment on his passing.
Update 7:10 p.m.: “Marty!” chants already starting up…gotta love it!
Update 7:15 p.m.: Another great penalty kill. The Rangers remain perfect for the year.
Update 7:28 p.m.: This fourth line is looking phenomenal so far this season. Orr, Betts, and Sjostrom are slowly becoming the third line.
Update 7:30 p.m.: GOAL! DUBINSKY! WHAT’S THE ONLY THING BETTER THAN A RANGERS GOAL?? A RANGERS GOAL ON A MARTY BRODEUR MISTAKE! BRODEUR TRIES TO CATCH THE PUCK AND IT DIPS RIGHT UNDERNEATH HIS GLOVE. RANGERS LEAD 1-0!
Update 7:32 p.m.: And the “Marty!” chants come out in force. The Garden is rocking tonight.
Update 7:34 p.m.: After a bit of a slow start the Rangers have been buzzing the last five minutes. All four lines are getting a real good forecheck going and the top unit just missed putting the Rangers up 2-0. This Devils team has a lot of issues scoring so to put another one in before the end of the period would go a long way to ensuring a 5-0 start.
Update 7:42 p.m. END OF 1ST: Another fantastic first period by the Rangers. It took a couple of minutes, but the Rangers really dominated the last 10-15 minutes of that period. All four lines got that signature 2008 Rangers forecheck going and the hottest line in the league potted another goal. Let’s see if the Rangers keep it up this time over three periods.
Update 8:04 p.m.: Extremely chippy game so far. The rivalry has always been intense, but it seems like last year has the rivalry in a bit of a renaissance.
Update 8:08 p.m.: The Rangers are just continuing to do what has made them so successful so far in the early going. They are relentless pursuing the puck on the forecheck and all five players on the ice are committed to defense. Rangers first power play now, with Rolston in the box.
Update 8:11 p.m.: GOAL! VOROS! VOROS IS EXACTLY WHAT THE POWER PLAY NEEDED. A GUY WHO PARKS HIMSELF IN FRONT AND ALLOWS THE DEFENSE TO RIP AWAY. THAT’S ANOTHER NICE CHANGE…THE DEFENSE RIPPING AWAY. GIRARDI TOOK ONE SHOT, GOT IT RIGHT BACK AND DIDN’T HESITATE WITH ANOTHER. RANGERS UP 2-0!
Update 8:15 p.m.: But Kalinin immediately to the box. Let’s see if the Rangers can stay 100% on the man down.
Update 8:16 p.m.: Big series of saves by The King. It’s gotta be difficult to stay in the game with such sparse work.
Update 8:19 p.m.: Another kill…raise your hand if you’re suprised.
Update 8:26 p.m.: Zherdev has to shoot that. I like the unselfishness, but that’s a time to be selfish.
Update 8:30 p.m.: Well they had to make a mistake sometime. The second line unable to get the puck out and Madden puts home a rebound after a big save by Lundqvist. The Devils really have upped the pace the last ten minutes or so. 2-1 Rangers.
Update 8:32 p.m. END OF 2ND: Oduya takes a bad penalty at the end of the period, so the Rangers will get to start the third on the man advantage. The Devils came back strong in the second half of the period to make a game of it. Still, a lot to be happy about so far.
I’ve gotta hand the blog off to Eric now. I have a commitment that I just can’t get out of tonight at 9. Gotta love DVR. Great comments so far guys. Let’s keep it going!
8:45 pm: Hey everyone, no need to fear, Eric is here. Please refrain from booing. As Steve mentioned earlier I have been on a long days journey from Baltimore. But, I have returned to catch the last period of Rangers v. Devis with you kind folks. I would personally like to send my condolences to those connected to Alexei Cherepanov, it is something I have yet to fully grasp but it is tragic none the less. But, again I’ll be blogging for the third period…don’t go running for the exits.
8:52 pm: PAUL MARA POWER PLAY GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RANGERS LEAD 3-1!!!!!!!!!! Might be credited to Voros…in which case that man is on fire. Thats how you capatalize on a PP!
8:55 pm: Goal stays with Mara, well deserved. Mara took control of that PP and had three quality shots before that one went in.
9:00 pm: Excellent save by Henrik! Langenbrunner was in perfect position and Hank stuffed him.
9:02 pm: Well sorry Paul. Voros ends up getting credit for the goal, Mara and Girardi on the assists. Two goals tonight for Voros, three on the season. Coincidence that he was featured in my parting shot this week? I think not.
9:05 pm: Voros now gets called for the penalty. Slashing is the call.
9:07 pm: Devis PP over. Rangers penalty kill now 3 for 3. Rangers PK did a great job of keeping all three of the Devisl shots to the outside. Couple nice saves by Hank as well.
9:12 pm: Salvador throws the puck into the crowd, that’s gonna get him two minutes for delay of game. Rangers on the PP. And a delayed penalty on top of that. White for high sticking. Rangers get a 5 on 3 for almost a full two minutes.
9:16 pm: PP over. Not a very good effort by the Rangers on that one. The Devils played it nicely but you have to score when your up two men. Not enough shooting to get the job done.
9:21 pm: The two captains going at it. A couple of cheap punches by Langenbrunner. Nice to see Drury getting into some fisticuffs…that’s what I like to see from the C.
9:23 pm: Marty leaves the net with 2:18 remaining.
9:25 pm: CALLAHAN ON THE EMPTY NETTER!!!!!! Thats the nail in the coffin folks!!! Rangers lead 4-1!!!! Rangers will move to 5-0!!!!!
End of the Game: Rangers are off the a 5-0 start. Let me repeat myself. The Rangers are off to a 5-0 start. They’re chanting “You Can’t Beat Us!” at the Garden and doesn’t look like anyone can right now. A great win against the Devils. This is getting exciting folks, there is no sign of this team slowing up. Voros gets his second first star. The 82-0 season is still alive. Wire to Wire BABY! Thanks for joining us everyone, we will have a show out hopfully by tomorrow night.

McKeever October 13th at 6:19 pm

richard keith October 13th at 6:20 pm
ah. you guys are my savior. i’m in my law class tonight till 9:30 and can’t watch the game…
steve, you’re my eyes and ears for tonight man!
richard keith October 13th at 6:20 pm
AIG got a bail out, so they still exist
Richard S. October 13th at 6:24 pm
bankruptcy doesnt mean they are out of business, they just get relief for debts owed
Richard S. October 13th at 6:26 pm
that line of zherdev-dubi-vorros is so good, I hope that renney doesnt mess it up like last years jagr-dubi-avery line
Gabbi R. October 13th at 6:27 pm
I guess they like the Rangers better than Mancherster United football (yeah I call it football, not soccer) club. I don’t blame them.
and my dad was like “Dubinsky is good.”
I said “He’s a monster!”
Zajac just missed, he couldn’t knocok the puck outta the air.
Richard S. October 13th at 6:31 pm
marty is so lame!
McKeever October 13th at 6:31 pm
I thought they had to cut their advertiesing by some number. Whatever…… MARTY! MARTY!
richard keith October 13th at 6:34 pm
another goal by dubinsky? life is good.
Gabbi R. October 13th at 6:36 pm
MAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRTYYYYYYYYYYYY!
MAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRTYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Dubi Dubi Du!
Drury’s shot was close.
Man, this is intense!
McKeever October 13th at 6:37 pm
DUBINSKY FOR PRESIDENT
Steven Gelbs October 13th at 6:39 pm
The question is, if Dubinsky ran would Flyers fans boo him more than Palin?
Gabbi R. October 13th at 6:40 pm
I VOTE YES WITH MCKEEVER!
Devils just got their 1st shot off in 13 minutes.
McKeever October 13th at 6:42 pm
Voros for vp?
Gabbi R. October 13th at 6:46 pm
But Voros is Canadian!
and if Dubi ran for president, he’ll make sure he dosen’t come on any free giveaway night. For the City of Brotherly Love, they can be fierce in Philly.
McKeever October 13th at 6:49 pm
I forgot that he was Canadian. Make it gomez or drury for vp
Richard S. October 13th at 7:01 pm
im sad about alexei, but do the rangers get a make up pick since he died? Wishful thinking right?
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:01 pm
ha maybe gomez.
the alaskins will rule!
mwahahaha (sorry, had to insert my evil laugh.)
looking like clarkson and voros might go anything at it soon.
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:03 pm
DUDE!
one of the Devils lept his feet when he had that check on the Ranger. Pssh.
Oduya third man in on that scrum fight with mara and elias!
Richard S. October 13th at 7:05 pm
mara gets a matching 2 for what? getting hit in the face a bunch of times!
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:08 pm
what the hell?
No penalties against the Devils unless matched by a Rangers penalty?!
I mean GET REAL.
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:09 pm
Korpikoski draws a Dev penalty.
Rolston for hooking.
Now let’s show what this PP’s got!
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:12 pm
WHOOO RANGERS GOAL!
and Voros celebrated in White’s face. HA!
That’s why he can be a fan favourite. and they gave him the goal too!
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:16 pm
they called Kalinin for Delay of game for clearing the puck into the netting in the offensive zone.
4th line out there for the PK.
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:18 pm
20-for-20 on the PK this season. hell yeah!
2-0 lead, again from the 2nd line.
gary October 13th at 7:19 pm
2 Questions,
1. How long of a contract do we have with Voros
2. With the way the 2nd line is playing and producing, would there ever be a chance that they get moved to the 1st and the 1st line of our captaincy be relegated to 2nd line?
gary October 13th at 7:21 pm
RE AIG:
As the Wall Street Journal pointed out recently, the AIG that’s in crisis and the one that wrote your insurance policy are, to a large degree, separate companies. The AIG on Wall Street is an umbrella company that owns stock in a lot of smaller insurance subidiaries. Your policies are held with your in-state subsidiary, which is tightly regulated.
According to state Insurance Superintendent Eric Dinallo, AIG’s insurance companies have substantially more in assets than they need to pay all valid present and projected claims. “Don’t worry and don’t make any rash decisions if you have a policy issued by an AIG insurance company,” Dinallo said.
It depends on which AIG is paying for the ice
Steven Gelbs October 13th at 7:21 pm
Gary,
Voros is signed for 3 years.
As for the first and second line, there really isn’t a great discrepancy in playing time for the lines anyway and the ranking of the lines is really only for the media anyway.
richard keith October 13th at 7:23 pm
please no talk about finance.
my curriculum is heavily focused on that major. too depressing. let’s talk about rangers!
gary October 13th at 7:25 pm
Richard, I agree but was just answering the question.
Steven, once again THANKS for the info, just got into hockey and the Rangers in January. Still learning.
Spent the summer watching what ever MSG had on it.
richard keith October 13th at 7:26 pm
no worries. hate typing, so hard to convey tone. i said it in my happy joking sarcastic way.
McKeever October 13th at 7:26 pm
It all makes sense now thanks for clareifying that. Hey Richard keith, cheer up! Market was up 938 points today
Steven Gelbs October 13th at 7:27 pm
Anytime Gary
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:28 pm
gary- that’s awesome you got to pick up a great sport!
How did you get involved??
Callahan’s playing a nice, checking game tonight.
and richard– reading the live blog instead of listening to the professor or instead of doing work?
(I’m supposed to be doing math & science, but it’s not going to well.)
McKeever October 13th at 7:28 pm
devils are upping there tempo
gary October 13th at 7:29 pm
before I forget, I need to note that my AIG response was from my Union’s New York State organization, NYSUT (New York State United Teachers) website on pension and insurance plans.
McKeever October 13th at 7:31 pm
is this the beginning of the infamous 2-0 curse?
richard keith October 13th at 7:31 pm
gabbi – hahaha yes, rangers are greater than lectures. i’ll read textbooks some other time.
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:31 pm
ohh.
dubi didn’t clear the zone and now it’s a rangers lead of 2-1.
who said shutout?! or even thought of it?!
just kidding. but dubi, ugh. thy givith and thy taketh away.
richard keith October 13th at 7:33 pm
btw…is our top line even playing? i havnt heard a thing about gomez, naslund, or drury…
gary October 13th at 7:36 pm
@Gabbi, Well with absolutely no hockey experience at all prior to late Jan 08.
My aunt’s boss had 2 tickets to the Tampa Bay @ Rangers game, she is not a big hockey fan, my step father and cousin were unable to attend, so I asked my co worker if he was interested in going so we took them. I went to Wikipedia to print hockey basics and the Rangers website to get the game notes to learn what was happening with the team and as they say I have been hooked since.
I am even on the Season Ticket Wait List
since late February.
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:38 pm
Gary, that’s totally cool.
I was born into hockey, so I mean that’s not a great story, now is it?
and I haven’t really heard a thing lately with the top line.
mostly 2-4.
gary October 13th at 7:40 pm
This is a great game, compared to the preseason Rangers Devils at MSG that I was at the arena for,
I hope we are playing this well the next time I go to the arena
richard keith October 13th at 7:41 pm
gary…
any tips for me on trying to convert my friend into a blueshirts fanatic?
she’s already in awe of the awesome plays i’ve showed her from last season, but i want her to get into the rangers specifically.
what exactly pulled you in? etc
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:45 pm
gary- i was at that preseason game as well.
where were you sitting?
my dad and i were up in the blueseats.
gary October 13th at 7:49 pm
I do not know what it was I just had a great time. If you can take her to the arena to see it in person. I think the arena and watching it live an being a part of the crowd got me into it. I was not really exposed to many sports as a youth, but now as a 20-something I am widening my tastes and while I still cannot get into the NBA, NFL, MLS or MLB… I have gotten into the NHL.
Previously, I might of watched little bits here and there as I was growing up but not fully interested. My job had to pay me to see a (ugh) Devils game about 10 years ago and was not really into it.
I have always enjoyed being in the garden as I am a long time Season Ticket holder for the WNBA New York Liberty, the energy of the arena was great. I also went with a friend who knew what was going on to help me learn.
gary October 13th at 7:50 pm

gary October 13th at 7:53 pm
GOAL! POWER PLAY GOAL!
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:54 pm
3-1!
MARTYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
gary October 13th at 7:54 pm
THe Nov 30 game has many seat on ticket exchange.
McKeever October 13th at 7:54 pm
there goes the 2-0 curse!
Gabbi R. October 13th at 7:59 pm
i’m going to that game (30th) as well!

december is the 27th vs. NJ
richard keith October 13th at 7:59 pm
i think i might make it for Oct 30th vs the Thrashers.
Gabbi R. October 13th at 8:03 pm
they just gave that goal to Voros.
apparently he deflected that one as well.
3rd goal of the season, 3rd for that line tonight.
gary October 13th at 8:03 pm
Since I was not picked for Season Tickets this season, I just spend 1600 on my “Rangers Viewing System” that I dont think I can do many more games this year. Plus I am thinking about getting a car too.
Gabbi, how do you get your tickets?
Voros got the GOAL! Voros got the GOAL!!! YEA VOROS!!! One more for the hat trick.
gary October 13th at 8:04 pm
Eric, when is it going to be released?
Gabbi R. October 13th at 8:05 pm
Voros is the man of the hour
they called him on slashing.
KILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!
McKeever October 13th at 8:07 pm
going up to Boston jan 31 to see the rangers play the bruins. Anybody else making the trip?
Eric Rothman October 13th at 8:10 pm
Gary, when is what going to be released?
McKeever October 13th at 8:12 pm
I think he means the next podcast
Gabbi R. October 13th at 8:14 pm
gary, my dad calls handicapped services, and i doubt this method will work for you, since you are probably not handicapped.
but we try to get tickets for weekend games once a month, accept for about one month. (This year it’s January since I have regional chorus & they’re mostly west coast then. Last season, we went to a devils-islanders game at pru center.)
this year hopefully i will go to the montreal game during april for my birthday.
but back to the game– ooh, rangers 5-3
and roszival can’t ****ing shoot. GREAT.
Eric Rothman October 13th at 8:15 pm
Steve and I haven’t had a chance to make a definite time to do the next podcast. But, we talked earlier in the week about doing one tomorrow evening. If not tomorrow, Wednesday for sure.
gary October 13th at 8:15 pm
thank McKeever
Gabbi R. October 13th at 8:19 pm
on a completely random note- why is it when you put salt on stuff like sunflower seeds or popcorn, the salt goes everywhere BUT on the food!? Or is this all just me??
and is salt flammable? I keep getting different answers.
and so much for a 5-3.
McKeever October 13th at 8:23 pm
I think mythbusters proved salt is not flammable
Gabbi R. October 13th at 8:24 pm
missed slashing call on the devils much?!
4-4. drury and langenbrunner out for fighting. i hate minerals.
gary October 13th at 8:27 pm
GREAT GAME
PLAY THE RANGERS VICTORY SONG!
PLAY IT LOUD!
Now on to Wednesday!
Gabbi R. October 13th at 8:29 pm
1st off- RANGERS WIN! RANGERS WIN! THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE RANGERS WIN!
five and ohhhhh! YEAH!
and that’s good to know salt isn’t flamable.
currently burning paper for a history project and my hands and almost everything is covered in salt. just making sure i won’t burst into flames.
3rd star- Dubi
2nd star- Lundqvist
1st star- AARON VOROS!
man I didn’t think I’d like this guy, but I got a soft spot for a screener.
McKeever October 13th at 8:32 pm
that chant only works for the Yankees and john sterling
gary October 13th at 8:41 pm
Voros is definitely staying on my Fantasy Hockey Team
