Live Blog – Game 8: Rangers @ Red Wings

Pregame: Good test tonight for the Rangers against the defending champs.  I think this game will really give us a gauge of how well the Rangers stack up against the best of the best.  Al Trautwig just called Joe Louis Arena a dump.  Fantastic.  Got to love a guy who knows there’s no way he can get fired.  Late Scratch for today’s game, Sam Rosen has the night off.  John Gianone will be doing the play-by-play on MSG.

7:09 pm: Well that was fast.  Detroit goal.  Couple deflections, off the post and past Hank.  Samuelsson gets the goal.  Rangers trail 1-0.

7:13 pm: Most underrated Ranger of this season so far, Dan Girardi.  Thoughts?

7:14 pm: This is going to be a long night.  Rangers are asleep at the wheel.  Detroit goal by Franzen.  Detroit leads 2-0.

7:22 pm: WE HAVE LIFE! RYAN  CALLAHAN, GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rangers trail 2-1.

7:25 pm: Rangers decided to show up, completely different team than they were the first three minutes.  Momentum is shifting to the Rangers.

7:31 pm: Red Wings continue to push the puck relentlessly.  Good stop on the 2 on 1 by Henrik.  Shots 10-6 Detroit.

7:35 pm: Great move by Zherdev in the neutral zone setting up that chance for Dubi.

7:40 pm: Rangers doing their best to keep pace.  Nice look for Gomez, couldn’t get it on net.

End of 1st: News Flash:  Red Wings are good.  Rangers spent the first few minutes of the period in awe of the defending champs.  Because of that they found themselves down 2-0.  But, the Rangers woke up and played well the rest of the period.  After one, down 2-1.

8:02 pm: Pace continues to be the story of this game.  Each team with some early chances, nothing comes of them.

8:04 pm: One reason for the pace is the fact there haven’t been any penalties and hardly any stoppages.

8:11 pm: Couple of very nice saves by Hank.  He’s really played well aside from the rebound he gave up on the second goal.

8:13 pm: Voros with the great chance off the pass from Dubi.  I don’t know how that didn’t go in, Voros arguing for a penalty.  No call.

8:18 pm: Well all this pressure someone was going to score.  Detroit scores after a one timer gets deflected twice and goes past Henrik.  Detroit leads 3-1.

8:22 pm: NIGEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rangers stay in this one with a beautiful shot by Dawes.  Rangers trail 3-2.

8:25 pm: First penalty of the game called on the Red Wings.  Let’s see if the Rangers can keep this momentum going and tie this one up.

8:29 pm: Not a good PP by the Rangers.  Follow that up by a penalty on Voros.  Time for the PK.

8:32 pm: Penalties are racking up.  Callahan for hooking. 5 on 3 for 30 seconds followed by a PP for 1:30.

End of 2nd: Good finish considering the circumstances, still have a penalty to kill for a minute in the third.  Overall, a good period for the Rangers.  Good job staying with Detroit.

8:52 pm: Penalty killed off.  Great job by the Rangers, even got a 3 on 2 SH chance.

8:53 pm: VOROS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOAL!!!!!!!!! ALL TIED UP BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Voros whiffed on one a second earlier but redeems himself there.  Game tied 3-3.

8:56 pm: Rangers doing a great job on the forecheck.  Pressure is on.

8:57 pm: VOROS!!!!!!!! HE IS SUPERMAN!!!!!!!!! GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!! Throws it off a Red Wing to bank it in. RANGERS LEAD 4-3!!!!!

9:01 pm: A complete 180 by this Rangers team from the first three minutes.  Firing on all cylinders and playing nice D as well.

9:04 pm: Rangers will go on their second power play.  Cleary gets called for roughing.  Time for some insurance goals.

9:07 pm: Exciting PP, near goals by Zherdev and Gomez.  This game is so intense.

9:13 pm: Henrik with two great saves.  Red Wings starting to gain some offensive momentum, Rangers still going well all around.

9:17 pm: Here we go.  Rangers called for too many men on the ice.  Terrible penalty to take with just over 5 minutes to play.

9:21 pm: All tied up.  Detroit is going to let you get away with that penalty.  Off a deflection off Redden’s skate.  Tied at 4.

End of Regulation: Wow. Some of the most intense hockey I’ve seen in a while.  Rangers deserve two points but they have one fore sure right now.  Let’s play some more.

9:30 pm: Well that didn’t take long.  Hossa puts one in just 30 seconds into OT.  Heartbreaking loss for the Rangers.  The boys showed some good fight but came up short.  Come away with a one point consolation.  Tough loss to swallow.

Gary October 18th at 6:03 pm

Gary October 18th at 6:05 pm

Sam is not a late scratch… I think he was the first scratch, last night they advised that Sam Rosen was not traveling tonight.

Gabbi R. October 18th at 6:07 pm

Gary October 18th at 6:09 pm

Eric if you are reading, you were great in this week’s episode got a chance to listen to it last night / today while proctoring the exams at work.

Hope that you get to do it more.

Gary October 18th at 6:10 pm

Damn… Red Wings too early

Gabbi R. October 18th at 6:10 pm

28 mo-fo-ing seconds.
this should be fun. *sarcasm*

Eric Rothman October 18th at 6:11 pm

Thanks Gary I appreciate the support, I will be hosting more shows the season.

Gary October 18th at 6:14 pm

Where is Valaquet?

Gabbi R. October 18th at 6:14 pm

2-0.
freaking kidding me.
like halfway through the period.
if that.

Gary October 18th at 6:15 pm

err * VALIQUETTE

Gary October 18th at 6:16 pm

Steven wanted giveaways, this is not what I think he was thinking about.

Gabbi R. October 18th at 6:18 pm

okay Danny Girardi.
i was also a fan of his last season as well.
I think he is an underrated player. the most underrated? I dunno. But he’s a defenseman, and so they’re not mentioned as much, because they’re just part of the solid base the team needs to succeed. When a team is doing well, it is mentioned on the goaltending and the offensive numbers, but when the team is losing, and it’s not the goalie, you blame the defense. I do think Danny deserves a little more credit than he gets.

Gary October 18th at 6:22 pm

G O A L
G O A L
GOMER GOT A GOAL!

Gabbi R. October 18th at 6:22 pm

Cally!
woot! plenty of room.
2-1. red wings had no one on cally.

Gary October 18th at 6:23 pm

Oops… Callahan got it

scummy October 18th at 6:23 pm

Beautiful shot by Cally, awesome heads up pass by Gomez.

Gary October 18th at 6:24 pm

“Newbie Question” can you explain what Rosen / Gianone mean by “one timer”?

Gary October 18th at 6:25 pm

Lundquest gets caught up in the game… err net ;)

Gary October 18th at 6:26 pm

Err.. what bad spelling I have today.. LUNDQVIST is what I meant

Gabbi R. October 18th at 6:26 pm

that should have been delay of game on that detriot guy.
wtf, cheap crap since they’re at home.
so this is how you win the Cup.

Eric Rothman October 18th at 6:26 pm

Gary, one timer is a shot taken directly off the pass without letting the puck settle

Gabbi R. October 18th at 6:27 pm

Gary, a one timer is just like one quick shot with no rebound. usually the goalie holds it.

Eric Rothman October 18th at 6:27 pm

…or without taking control of the puck

Gary October 18th at 6:27 pm

Thanks Eric,

Gabbi R. October 18th at 6:27 pm

listen to eric rather than me.
i’m not the professional.

McKeever October 18th at 6:30 pm

sorry I’m late boys I was eating dinner with the fam. anybody notice all the empty seats in the lower bowl or is it just me?

Gabbi R. October 18th at 6:33 pm

McKeever- yeah I noticed that too.
I’m just wondering how much more empty it’s gonna be in Columbus when the Rangers play there on the 24th of this month??

Eric Rothman October 18th at 6:33 pm

I did notice McKeever. Red Wings attendance has been down last few years. Detroit isn’t really economically booming right now.

Gary October 18th at 6:34 pm

McKeever welcome to the party… anything good for dinner

Gary October 18th at 6:36 pm

I hate those Geico commercials as they are a bunch of B*

Back to Rangers, great sliding just before the TV TimeOut

McKeever October 18th at 6:36 pm

I cooked steaks for everybody and made potatoes from scratch

Gary October 18th at 6:37 pm

I think I will cook dinner in intermission

McKeever October 18th at 6:38 pm

and those smoking commercials with the guy with the traciotomoty or hole in his throat. that convinced me not to smoke

Gabbi R. October 18th at 6:40 pm

mmmm…. how i wish for homemade mashe potatoes. i only get them for thanksgiving. i hate frozen chicken.

I am enjoying my third wierd drink of the day.

McKeever October 18th at 6:42 pm

just your typical Irish American family dinnerfor ya

Gary October 18th at 6:43 pm

what is the drink?

The Smoking commercials are playing TOO often.

Re: Geico they try selling me car insurance for 1900+ for liability for 6 months when state farm is for the liability, comprehensive and collision is 936 for 6 months

Gary October 18th at 6:44 pm

dinner time… venturing to the kitchen

Gabbi R. October 18th at 7:03 pm

Well ther wierd thing is my grandmother is all Irish and she hates potatoes. I can’t live without them.

Gary October 18th at 7:05 pm

My dinner would fit in to your family Gabbi, I am having Wild Mushroom Ravioli and served it with a spicy tomato and sausage sauce that I made on Monday.

Gary October 18th at 7:05 pm

Being part German, I love my German Food and Bier

Gary October 18th at 7:23 pm

Nigel Dawes, wants his job… GOAL!

Gabbi R. October 18th at 7:23 pm

Nigel Dawes!
yeah, just as my dad just finished saying how the rangers should trade him. funny how things like that work out.

Gary October 18th at 7:25 pm

Rangers POwER PLAY!

Gabbi R. October 18th at 7:25 pm

rangers with the first PP of the night on a Detroit interference.

Gary October 18th at 7:26 pm

Ok time to work on my Fantasy Team… I am getting my butt kicked this week

McKeever October 18th at 7:26 pm

This just popped in my head. Are the rangers unveiling an alternate jersey this year? I know a lot of teams are doing so this year

Gary October 18th at 7:27 pm

I asked this a few games back, according to steven he does not think so from what he has heard

Gabbi R. October 18th at 7:30 pm

now a detroit PP
Voros.

Gary October 18th at 7:30 pm

Gary
October 11th at 6:04 pm
Is there any word of the return of the Rangers’ third jersey as other teams are announcing there

Steven Gelbs
October 11th at 6:08 pm
Gary,
From what I’ve heard the Rangers will only be going with the home blue and road white again this year.

Gabbi R. October 18th at 7:33 pm

31 second two-man advantage for detroit.
calling callahan for invisible crap.

McKeever October 18th at 7:34 pm

I thought I saw that note before thanks Gary

Gabbi R. October 18th at 7:36 pm

yeah rangers aren’t going with the 3rd jersey this season.

McKeever October 18th at 7:48 pm

good. I wish they would go back to wearing whites at home. also remind me to stop using my iPod touch for the live blog. typing on this is very difficult

Gary October 18th at 7:51 pm

Gabbi R. October 18th at 7:57 pm

AARON WITH TWOOOO

McKeever October 18th at 7:57 pm

another thing I just noticed. The clock on the live blog is off by an hour

Gary October 18th at 7:58 pm

Does anyone think that John G is going to have a heart-attack?

Gary October 18th at 7:58 pm

Well figuratively on that reaction

McKeever October 18th at 8:01 pm

I miss Sam rosen I think he’s better than john g

Gary October 18th at 8:02 pm

Gary October 18th at 8:05 pm

Nice save/miss what ever you want to call it.

Gabbi R. October 18th at 8:18 pm

too many men on the ice for the 2nd night in a row.

Gary October 18th at 8:21 pm

damn, they tied it/…. please no OT
rangers lets get one more goal!

Gabbi R. October 18th at 8:21 pm

well that was some serious bull shit marginal call. he was at the bench. this is how they win, by cheap calls in their favour.

Gary October 18th at 8:24 pm

Gabbi you a new yorker or Canadian? Favor – Favour :-)

I call a Penalty on the Officials…

Gabbi R. October 18th at 8:28 pm

i don’t know why either.
and nooo nicky can’t be hurt!
slash on the hand :(

McKeever October 18th at 8:28 pm

I’ll take the conselation prize of 1 point

Gabbi R. October 18th at 8:31 pm

hossa scored.
oh well.
still glad the rangers got a point outta that. one beats none, but nothing takes the cake like two.

Gary October 18th at 8:34 pm

Ugh, this demonstrates the problem with the NHL’s Overtime rules

Gary October 18th at 8:36 pm

Last time I checked other sports, an over time is not sudden death it is a set period and if at the end one team is above they win, if not they continue per their rules.

Basketball / Baseball etc… continues extra “frames/periods/innings….”

Gabbi R. October 18th at 8:55 pm

I’d like that better.
it gives the opportunity for a rebound.
sudden death should be the playoffs

Richard S. October 18th at 11:53 pm

you say that until the rangers win in overtime

In a game like hockey where 60 min of scoreless hockey happens on a fairly consistent basis, a golden goal type of overtime is necessary.

Gary October 19th at 12:51 pm

I don’t mind the shoot out after overtime, however just because someone gets a lucky shot does not mean that the game should be over 28 seconds into the period.

The overtime period should be played out. Its 5 minutes for goodness sakes.

This whole idea of sudden death should not happen as it is not fair to the teams.

I have said this since I started watching hockey.

It should be as follows:

Regulation Time
1 Over Time Period, played to completion
Shoot Out, minimum best of 3.
