Live Blog – Game 9: Stars @ Rangers…He’s Baaaack!

PRE-GAME: Sean Avery makes his return to the Garden tonight as the Stars make their only trip to New York this season.  As I said in today’s podcast, Avery may get a mixed reaction from the fans during tonight’s game.  If that happens, that’s a shame.  Sean Avery was a great Ranger and about as popular as an athlete can get in New York.  The same reason why Ranger fans loved him during his tenure may be the reason they hate him tonight.  But it would be hypocritical to boo him because of it.

Even now, watching Avery get into it with Dubinsky and Vally, doesn’t make me mad…it makes me miss him more.

All that being said, the Rangers will need to do their best to tune him out as they go for another two points tonight.  The Stars have gotten off to a bit of a rough start (1-3-1), but they’re a very explosive team waiting to erupt at any second.  The Rangers will have to give a full 60 minute effort (something we’ve really yet to see) in order to take this one.

Rismiller in, Korpikoski out.  Everything else remains the same.

Avery vs. NY, Lundqvist vs. Lundqvist, Rismiller vs. Modano (okay, maybe not the last one).  Should be fun.

Update 7:09 p.m.: The Rangers go on the early power play, but more importantly Avery goes on the early offensive.  Dubinsky and Lundqvist already getting an earful.

Update 7:10 p.m.: GOAL!!! MARKUS NASLUND!  HOUSTON WE HAVE A PULSE! #91 LIVES! 1-0 RANGERS!!

Update 7:13 p.m.: Avery just touched the puck and boos rained down. Ridiculous.

Update 7:15 p.m.: Nice boost by Drury to get a good shot off.  The Rangers looking very quick tonight.

Update 7:18 p.m.: Boy that Gomez line looks good.  If they could get a couple of those on net, we’d be looking at a two goal lead.

Update 7:23 p.m.: “LLOYD!!!” Jeremy Piven of Entourage is in the building.

Update 7:26 p.m.: …and apparently so is Michael Imperioli of the Sopranos.  It’s an HBO Garden Party!

Update 7:34 p.m.: Turco looks very shaky so far.  Too many rebounds.

Update 7:37 p.m.: Great save by Lundqvist.  Terrible job by the fans at the Garden with the booing of Avery.

Update 7:39 p.m. END OF 1ST: Solid period for the Rangers.  They came out strong, dominating the first 7 or so minutes of the game.  The Stars found their footing, but the Rangers had some good chances throughout.  I can’t emphasize enough how disappointed I am in the fans at the game for booing Avery.  Every single person there LOVED him a few short months ago.  Not liked him…LOVED HIM!  He put the Rangers in the playoffs two years in a row and deserves a better reception.

Update 7:58 p.m.: Gorgeous pass from Gomez to Dawes.  Gomer is flying tonight.

Update 8:04 p.m.: The Stars tie the game on the power play.  Gotta give Morrow credit there.  Beautiful goal.

Update 8:09 p.m.: Strong move by Naslund draws a penalty.  Rissmiller comes in with a late hit on Avery after the play.

Update 8:19 p.m.: A pretty clear trip by Ribeiro was just missed.

Update 8:21 p.m.: Nifty little pass there by Zherdev.  The 2nd line looks very strong again, but the Rangers need to pick up the pace again.  The Stars are looking much better here in the second.

Update 8:30 p.m. END OF 2ND: 14.  That’s the big number right now.  The Rangers have missed the net 14 times and it’s cost them dearly.  The Stars played a much better period in the second and the Rangers didn’t necessarily have the same forecheck going as they did in the first.  Yet, whenever they had an opportunity, it seemed that they missed the net.  Especially with a shaky Marty Turco in net, you’ve got to put the pucks on goal.

And if anybody has a Chris Drury sighting, please let me know.

Update 8:59 p.m.: Modano puts the Stars up 2-1.  The Rangers just haven’t had the same jump they had in the first period.  Mikey putting it right where Henke’s vulnerable.

Update 9:02 p.m.: The fans giving Avery the Brodeur treatment, with an “Avery!” chant.  Stupid.

Update 9:06 p.m.: Rozsival with the inopportune penalty.  The Rangers need a big kill…and a big spark now.  It’s a little ironic, but this is a game that the Rangers could really use Avery’s spunk.

Update 9:19 p.m. FINAL – STARS 2, RANGERS 1: And that concludes a tough 7 games in 11 night stretch and the end couldn’t come soon enough.  The Rangers looked good in the first period, but fatigued and slow from there on out.  There really wasn’t much going on from the Rangers end in the final 30 minutes.

Still, when the schedule came out, I don’t know a Ranger fan alive who wouldn’t have signed up for a 6-2-1 record when the dust cleared.  Come Friday though, the excuses stop.  The team seems to be coming down to earth a little bit right now.  Whether that’s a sign of the schedule or the team won’t be known until next week.

I did some research for tonight game

Nausland has 41 points (22 goals 19 assists) in 48 games vs the stars

the stars are 36-67-22 all time vs the rangers

The rangers have outscored their opponents 8-4 in the first period this year

Gary October 20th at 5:59 pm

Ok ready for this one to start.

Lets Go Rangers!

BTW, has anyone noted that the rangers have taken down the Liberty Rangers Logo from the wall paper pages?

Lets see what they come up with as they call it Wallpaper Week.

Dan M October 20th at 6:01 pm

I’m glad they did I hated that logo

McKeever October 20th at 6:05 pm

why do my comments keep getting moderated i didnt say any bad words!

Steven Gelbs October 20th at 6:07 pm

McKeever, should work now. Here’s what happens. Anytime someone new comments it goes into moderation. Since you changed your name a couple times it went into moderation.

I approved them both though so now Dan McKeever or Dan M will work.

Dan M October 20th at 6:10 pm

oh alright I was scratching my head for bit. Nausland goal!!!!!!!!!

Dan M October 20th at 6:12 pm

I just noticed where’s gabbi r? She’s usually here by now

gary October 20th at 6:14 pm

As both a Liberty (WNBA) and Rangers fan it was great that I could wear it to both teams without problems

gary October 20th at 6:43 pm

that was me last wk

Dan M October 20th at 6:43 pm

I can see why fans are booin avery. He’s trying to pick fights with everybody he sees and quite frankly, I think he needs a Dubinsky uppercut to the jaw. Avery is forever a punk in which we used to love

Steven Gelbs October 20th at 6:46 pm

Dan,
I’m not surprised by the reaction…I said it would probably happen on the show today…but I think it’s a disgrace.

This is what everyone loved about him. Of course he’s going to play that way today. That’s what makes him so great.

The guy deserves to get some kudos for what he did for the organization. On top of it, it wasn’t as if he wanted any part of playing in another uniform. I’m sorry, but there’s no reason to boo…at least not initially.

Dan M October 20th at 6:54 pm

Steve I agree we all used to love him and was one of our favorite rangers and was the reason we made the playoffs when he was here but we liked it when he was a pest towards the other team. Now that were getting a taste of our own medicine, we need to show him that were better off with out him. Plus I think avery in the long run was more of a distraction to the rangers than a benefit

gary October 20th at 7:03 pm

I am glad to see Voros taking an agressive posture but clean and not being stupid about it. He seems to have the potential to be a great player.

what do you think of the Avery Voros comparisons that are being made?

scummy October 20th at 7:09 pm

Steve… I think the fact that Avery went right after Vally, Hank, and Doobie gives the fans at the Garden a right to boo him. If he’s not gonna salute the fans or at least show a guy like Hank (his former team mate of “just a few months ago”) a little respect, he doesnt deserve the fan support. Also, he’s stated he wanted to stay in NY and for all intents and purpose his statement(s) point to that… but the point is he CHOSE to go where the money was. He may claim he wanted to stay but quite frankly thats BS. He wanted money, therefore he does not deserve our CONTINUED respect.

Steven Gelbs October 20th at 7:14 pm

Scummy,
I respect everyone’s opinion on this, but I just can’t agree. Anybody who expected him to not come out an stir things up, wasn’t watching the last 2 seasons.

As for him wanting the money, he wanted respect. The fact of the matter is Glen Sather CLEARLY wanted no part of him on this team. Good or bad, that’s obvious. If the Rangers showed any desire to negotiate, Avery would still be a Ranger.

Gabbi R. October 20th at 7:22 pm

aww guys!
glad to see I’m missed.
I’ve been stuck with some math HW and it’s really bugging me.
if i have to do one more x squared-1=y problems I might scream. it’s taking twice as long since we also have to plot these points.
I told my dad I’m “getting coloured pencils” when I’m really checking in.

this game has looked pretty fun, though I’m still waiting for my Avery-Dubinsky fight!!

scummy October 20th at 7:27 pm

Blah good call Steve, we’ve seen Sather do similar hardheaded/heatless moves in the past.. but its like arguing about politics or religion, no-where it goes.

Steven Gelbs October 20th at 7:29 pm

Good enough scummy. Agree to disagree.

Dan M October 20th at 7:32 pm

those problems are easy compared to pre-calculs problems I’ll trade hw with you LOL

Gabbi R. October 20th at 7:53 pm

McKeever, I’ll definately pass. It’s been a loooooooong day.
and pre-calc is maybe playoff time, so I’ll be good for a while.

and back to the game– Nifty goal by Morrow. And glad to see Nazzy back in the action. I really need the Rangers to score again soon.
this is so not the day for the game to go into OT, especially when the rangers have had a lot of missed shots.

Gabbi R. October 20th at 8:03 pm

UGH. Stars goal.
Didn’t I just specifically ask for a RANGERS goal?!
and where’s my Avery-Dubinsky fight?!
WTF, this is not the way I wanted this!!

and Steve- I feel your pain. I am rediculously pale (from my Irish and German-ness.) I don’t even get a tan. I go from white to lobster red. My running inside joke with my friends is “If I were any whiter, people would be following me with vacuums singing the ghostbusters theme song.”

I’m falling asleep, and I really am trying my damndest not to fall asleep. Fancy pants adventure 2 isn’t helping either. and I still have so much to do.

boy, do i hate mondays.

Gabbi R. October 20th at 8:06 pm

roszival for “interference”

balter16 October 20th at 8:13 pm

they cant do a thing out there, reminds me of alot of the games from last year…

Gabbi R. October 20th at 8:18 pm

another loss.
not even OT for one point?!
and columbus friday.
warm, cold, or no big difference in welcome for Nicky Zherdev, you think?

Dan M October 20th at 8:23 pm

Me too gabbi. I’m 100%Irish red hair blue eyes and can burn in probally 30 minutes on a good day with no sunscreen

Gabbi R. October 20th at 9:39 pm

Anyone else get to see avery’s post-game chat with Stan Fischler? He called Vally a minor leaguer (which i was like “Sean!”) but then he smoothed himself out by saying how Dubi is a great player and can be a great player.

that interview made me miss him more. Its wierd- i feel like strangling myself when watching that. I don’t even know. It’s not like I want to strangle him for stuff he said. It’s way wierd for my taste, but yeah I miss him.

but now I’m running on practically empty, so I will sign out, until later guys.
