Deja Vu All Over Again

In the midst of Steve ranting about Doc Ock (aka Glen Sather), I figured I’d get my voice in on the action.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you why Tom Renney should go, or why Glen Sather is a terrible GM…you all know that already.

But, what gets lost in the arguments over upper management is the team on the ice.  So, let’s talk some hockey.

Way back in January, we did a show where I said that the Rangers needed a strong month to keep Tom Renney around.  This was because the team was about to go up against the likes of Washington, Pittsburgh, Montreal, Chicago and Boston.

I honestly thought the team had a legitamite shot of going 2-10 during the month, with wins only coming against teams like the Islanders and the Senators.

Well, the team played alright, going 6-5-1 in the month.  So, Renney remained.

Now the team is in a more precarious position than before.  They are teetering on the edge of the playoff hunt and seemingly have no hockey ability left.

That being said, this team, right now, can quell some of the fan outrage in just two weeks.  Two games against the Islanders, two games against Toronto, one against Colorado….WAHLAH!  Simple right?

Those teams have a combined record of 65-89-17.  If this team can figure out something, maybe only for a brief while, they could realistically take 7 or 8 points against these teams.

Not saying it’s going to happen, but if this team still wants to have a chance at the end of the regular season, this is as good a time as any to get back on the horse.

During the aforementioned month of January, Henrik Lundqvist had a GAA of 2.22, and that includes  two 6-goal games.  Since that time, his GAA is 3.04.

Henrik needs to be better for this team to win.  Granted, he’s not getting the help around him to facilitate better games a lot of the time, but this team lives and dies by The King.

Also during the month of January, the team averaged 2.27 goals per game.  Since that time, the team is averaging a mere 1.5 goals per game.  That has to be better.

So, what’s the point of this all?  To remind everyone that this team, this coach, and this GM have won a few games this season.

Sure, they pretty much all stink right now.  But that 6-5-1 month of January was against good teams.  These next two weeks (Blues debacle excluded) are games against bad teams, teams the Rangers can beat and did beat earlier in the season.

Maybe, just maybe, this team can win a couple and at least entertain us all for a few more days.

Want to know what I find so amazing?

The Canadiens told Alex Kovalev not to come with them on the trip, and that he should take some time off. So in essence, the Habs are benching their third overall team scorer (13 goals 26 assists for 39 points) while extreme underperformer Wade Redden (2 goals 7 assists) gets to play game in and game out and cannot get reprimanded for laying an egg.

Now some might say “well Kovalev’s a winger and Redden’s a “defenceman”.”

Just because they’re a defenceman dosen’t mean they can’t score. I mean look at Mike Green! The guy’s got 22 goals and 28 assists so far!

The Candadiens bench one of their key guys for the last few years because he’s been slumping. Wade Redden’s laid an egg since day one and still laces up the skates. Just another part of the joke, right?

I do it all the time too, and I’m Italian (and a little Polish – that might explain it)

Gabbi, Renney benches Zherdev all the time! What else do you want from the guy? (sarcasm)
