Gaborik to Rangers (Updated)…Neil Stays in Ottawa

Darren Dreger is reporting that the Rangers have signed Marion Gaborik for 5 years at $7.5 million.  This is all according to TSN.

More in a few!

Update (8:24): Heres the TSN article for you…

Former Minnesota Wild winger Marian Gaborik has agreed to a five-year contract with the New York Rangers.

The Slovakian forward will earn $7.5 million per year.

Gaborik played his entire seven-year career with the Wild, scoring 219 goals and 437 points in 502 games. Injuries limited Gaborik to just 13 goals and 23 points in 17 games this season. Gaborik set career highs in goals (42), assists (41) and points (83) in 77 games during the 2007-2008 campaign.

The 27-year-old was Minnesota’s first pick (third overall) at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

Well that helps.  Marian Gaborik is going to be a Ranger.  A little risky considering his history of injury.  But, he is a proven goal scorer when he is healthy.  If he can get back to where he was two seasons ago, this guy will be great.

Now, if they could get Tanguay, that would be excellent.

UPDATE: THE NUMBER IS $7.5 MILLION NOW!  Not $5.75 million as originally reported.

Update (8:35): Want to talk about spending money?  Dreger is reporting that Gionta has signed with Montreal for 5 years, $25 million. Gionta and Gomez reunited.

Update (8:41): Chris Neil is staying in Ottawa according to Dreger.  4 years for $8 million .  I would not have been pleased if he signed along with Brashear, so this is great in my book.

Update (9:10): John Madden signs one year deal with Chicago.

Update (9:31): Freddy Shoes signs with Calgary for $750K over 2 years.

YES, if true, YES! Jedi death indeed.

Inferno July 1st at 7:29 pm

This is a steal…this is beyond a steal. We just added one of the 5 most talented players in the NHL today for a pricetag cheaper than Drury, Redden or Gomez.

Excuse me while I change my underwear.

Inferno July 1st at 7:31 pm

still well worth it at 7.5 per, no question whatsoever.

Eric Rothman July 1st at 7:32 pm

Not quite inferno, the salary reported was wrong. It’s now $7.5 million a year

Drew July 1st at 7:32 pm

unfortunate news that it is actually 7.5M per year. Makes the news significantly worse.

Inferno July 1st at 7:39 pm

worse? you guys are complaining about signing one fo the most prolific goal scorers in the NHL?!! His only question is health…last season in the final 17 games after the surgery that was supposed to (finally) correct his hip problem, he scored 13 goals….13!!!!

Plebeian July 1st at 7:40 pm

What did I tell you?
Brashier (and possibly Niel) were brought in to protect our newest prize.

Richard S July 1st at 7:54 pm

hey guys are we getting a new show soon?

Eric Rothman July 1st at 7:57 pm

Richard, new episode coming Friday!

Plebeian July 1st at 8:00 pm

I keep hearing Sjoestrom to calgary,…but I cant get any confirmation

gabbi r. July 1st at 8:14 pm

Have Dubinsky & Callahan been resigned?

Plebeian July 1st at 8:21 pm

Not that I know of as of yet, but they were tendered qualifying offers I think, so we would have the right to match if anyone tried to sign them to an offer sheet.
Cap room has to be dwindling though, he better do it soon (or dump redden – my personal preference)

Scummy July 1st at 8:24 pm

Told you guys to watch out for mtl though… as long as cally and dubi come back we should be in gear for doom.

Plebeian July 1st at 8:25 pm

Sjoestrom to Calgary was confirmed by NHL.com tracker, but nothing about it on TSN’s tracker…wonder whats up

Inferno July 1st at 8:33 pm

2 years, 750k per season…

guy was a nice player…but ill still take Gaborik at 10 times the price :)

Brendan July 1st at 8:33 pm

dump redden or rozi and keep the signings coming.

Mike G July 1st at 8:34 pm

If Gaborik stays healthy and they dump Brashaer then Im stoked.

Richard S July 1st at 8:36 pm

our penalty kill has taken a huge hit, goodbye number 1, hello number 15

billy July 1st at 8:36 pm

gaborik was a steal, should bring tons of excitement have to admit gonna miss freddy killing penalties but higgins should fill that role quite nicely

Inferno July 1st at 8:39 pm

disagree Richard, weve still got 4 superb penalty killers in Callahan, Drury, Higgins and Korpedo.

Richard S July 1st at 9:14 pm

I dont see this team being as effective w/o their number 1 penalty killing team

Plebeian July 1st at 9:16 pm

so how much cap room do we have left as of now?

I would still very much like to take another stab at Antropov, maybe if he didn’t get scooped up on day one they could entice him to accept a lower offer than he was expecting.

Inferno July 1st at 9:16 pm

some food for thought, over the past 4 seasons, Gaborik has averaged almost 50 goals per 82 games played…..now if we luck out and this guy stays healthy, youve got the backbone to build your franchise around.

Inferno July 1st at 9:16 pm

enough to fill out the rest of our team for sure Pleb

Richard S July 1st at 9:23 pm

according to nhlnumbers the cap hit as of right now is 40 mil

Mike B July 1st at 10:01 pm

You’re asking a lot of Gaborik to play a full season. He’s only played more than 70 once in the past 5 years. I would have been fine with 5.75 per, but at 7.5 that’s not a steal. I would call this a good signing, but there is a ton of risk involved here and that risk should have had value. Glennie opened his wallet again. This guy just cannot negotiate when money is involved. He’s like that sucker that walks onto a car lot and pays sticker price for a jalopy. Hopefully GAborik will come through, but I’m not exactly jumping out of my seat here screaming like it’s June of 1994.

Sather:

“I’ve been having conversations (with other general managers) and there are centers available.”

Hockey Rodent seems to think they may be looking for some sort of trade to acquire Brad Richards from Dallas, or perhaps Vinny from Tampa Bay?
