Rangers Sign Brashear (UPDATED)

Details coming, but this is quite simply a disastrous signing in my opinion. Brashear plays the game the absolute wrong way and took out Blair Betts last season with a disgraceful hit in the playoffs. You let Colton Orr go and replace him with a low life like Brashear? It makes no sense.

I have a hard time believing Ranger fans can root for this guy. I know I won’t be able to do it. Yet another brilliant Sather signing…

Update 2:54 p.m.: Daren Millard is reporting the deal is for 2 years/$1.4 million per season. Can someone please hide Glen Sather’s phone every July 1st?

Update 2:56 p.m.: Rangers sign Brashear, while the Caps sign Knuble. Caps 1, Rangers 0 (or Caps 10, Rangers -20).

Update 2:59 p.m.: Carp sums up this signing beautifullyThe Brashear numbers, according to TSN: Two years, $1.4 million per. So why the heck not just keep Colton Orr for $1 M per???? Brashear can’t play, is hated by Rangers fans, and violated the Rangers in the playoffs. Makes no sense to me.

Update 3:39 p.m.: Gotta love Carpy not holding anything back. His latest quote from Rangers Report while posting the press release about Brashear: “Let’s start with this putrid announcement from the Rangers…”

if betts wasn’t sure about coming back before, there is NO WAY he is coming back now

MIke G July 1st at 1:56 pm

Please God tell me they’re packaging him in a trade… how can you ahve both Betts and Brashear?

Teresa July 1st at 2:00 pm

Betts I am sure is gone. Why lose Orr for one million only to add Brashear for 1.4? I hope he is part of a trade because with the Betts hit and the Shanny fight, no Ranger fan can root for him, in my opinion. Just awful!

Nick July 1st at 2:05 pm

I will boo Brashear every time he has the puck.

Richard S July 1st at 2:14 pm

over/under 5 games that Brashear costs the Rangers this year with his irresponsible playing

Ryan F. July 1st at 2:19 pm

Well, now we probably don’t have enough money to sign Gaborik. Slats better get this deal with Heatley done already!

Gabbi R. July 1st at 2:21 pm

I’m saving up for the first game of the season just so I can boo this clown.

Plebeian July 1st at 2:30 pm

At least Pronger might think twice before playing dirty against the Rangers.

I dont see what the big fuss is about. He IS a much better player than Orr ever was. So what if he is dirty? We are not on the receiving end of it…that’s good news.

If you boo him off the bat, he will never embrace the Rangers, and then he wont put forth any effort and it WILL turn out to be a bad signing…if you give him a chance however, he might just turn out to be a plus.

Put the past behind you, evaluate him on what kind of player he turns out to be, not his past actions against the Rangers. If he sucks, and costs the team some games because of his actions…THEN boo him

Gabbi R. July 1st at 2:34 pm

Give him a chance to hurt the Rangers more than help? I don’t want him to embrace us. He’s a thug, and has only fists, and no hockey skills. I never wanted him on the Rangers roster and never will want him to wear our uniform

Gabbi R. July 1st at 2:41 pm

Ooh, Mike Knuble was given the same contract as Brashear to go play in Washington…

Ryan F. July 1st at 2:44 pm

First Inferno, now Plebeian. Why are you guys defending this clown? If you were the GM of the rangers, would you have made this signing? For every point Brashear scores, he will screw us over with his irresponsible play. There is no sense in waiting to see what kind of player he will be in a rangers jersey. He has been a goon for his entire career, and he is not going to turn over a new leaf for the rangers. This is Ryan Hollweg X10!

Gabbi R. July 1st at 2:44 pm

I lied. He’s making $2.8 per season, not in total. Oops.

Richard S July 1st at 2:48 pm

it is reported that he signed for 1.4 a year, 2.8 in total

Steven Gelbs July 1st at 2:56 pm

Rangers make offer to Chris Neil. New blog post is now up about it.

Gabbi R. July 1st at 2:58 pm

Seems that Slats has totally forgotten that we need scoring… Word has it we’re going after Chris Neil now…

adampasz July 1st at 3:14 pm

Ugh. All the news coming out over the summer is awful. Sather chasing after high-priced has-beens. Sather signing goons and letting our more reliable players walk. If things keep heading this direction, I doubt I will be following the Rangers very closely next season. (Though of course I will continue to listen to the NY Rangerscast!)

adampasz July 1st at 3:18 pm

Whoah. I just saw the news about Gomez for Chris Higgins on Inferno’s site. I do like Higgins a lot (though I liked Gomez too). There’s just way too much news. It seems like we’re getting an entirely new team next year, yet again. You guys have to do another episode ASAP to help us sort everything out!

Plebeian July 1st at 3:18 pm

It only sounds like I am defending him because I am not ripping him apart. I don’t hate the signing, He’s got more hockey skill than you give him credit for. (for a goon)

Yes he can be a liability, and a goon, but he is also a deterrent and a damn effective one. I will wait and see before I pass judgement.

You all call him an animal but you sound like a pack of wild animals yourselves, tearing into him before he plays a single game.

Plebeian July 1st at 4:43 pm

P.S.

Ryan, I dont think Inferno was defending him per say, he was just stating that he put up better numbers than Orr
