Artem Anisimov Talks Off-Season with the NYRangerscast

After averaging over a point per game in the AHL last season, Rangers’ prospect Artem Anisimov is primed to make the jump to the NHL this season. Currently training in Russia, Anisimov was gracious enough to take a few minutes to talk with us about his off-season so far and his chances of making the team out of camp.

Q: What has this summer been like for you? What have you done and what do you plan on doing before coming back to America in September?

ANISIMOV: Before training I simply rested, hung out with my relatives and friends, and went house hunting with my girlfriend. In the beginning of June I started my training in the gym and jogged. The Rangers gave me a special training program which I am using to prepare for the season. I want to come to training camp at my maximum level of preparation.

John Tortorella has been talking about Rangers players having to be better conditioned next season then they were last year. What are you doing to prepare for what’s sure to be a very tough training camp?

I am training intensively, working on my form on the ice and in the gym. In the gym I do various types of weight training and besides that I am constantly jogging. Also, I swim five times a week and try to play tennis as often as possible.

You had a great season in the American Hockey League last year. Do you feel you are ready to make the jump to the NHL?

Last season was very successful for me. I was flattered to be invited to the all-star game. That was my first time participating in something like that. I received good experience playing North American hockey last year. I played 80 games for Hartford, scoring 81 points which, in my opinion, is a good indicator. I have been living in the U.S. for two years now and I feel that I have gained enough experience. I understand the style of North American hockey and I like it very much. I now feel I have the strength to play in the NHL.

You got a little taste of the NHL last season, playing in one regular season game and one playoff game. Do you think that experience will help you as you try to make the Rangers this season?

The first game in the regular season against Atlanta gave me tremendous experience. After that game I was sent back to the farm club, but I understood what I had to work on and what my goals were.

As for the playoff game with Washington, I cannot describe it in words. After these two games I truly knew what it meant to play in the NHL. It was a priceless experience which I am hoping will help me.

Finally Artem, tell Ranger fans what the best aspect of your game is? Shooting, passing, skating or something else?

I keep working on all the components of my game since I need all of them on the ice. After each practice, I stay on the ice working on my shooting and when I participate in the drills I try to accurately make passes. I still have to improve my skating. But if I had to isolate the best part of my game, it would probably be passing.

Thanks to Artem Anisimov for agreeing to do this interview and thank you everybody who sent in questions for him. Also a special thanks goes out to Ella Kishelova and Mike & Igor Tarnow for helping to translate the interview for us.

Snore…. i bet if you asked 100 professional athletes these questions, you’d get these exact answers from about 99 of them.

Thanks for the interview. He has the right attitude.

I expect Artie to be a Ranger next season and vie for the Calder Cup.

Sweet. Just listening to WFAN at two in the morning, and I just heard on the sports update that you can meet the 1989 Little League World Series champions from Trumbull, CT! That’s right! Rangers captain and possibly most noted little leaguer EVER is going to be taking part in a charity homerun derby in his hometown. Sounds like fun.

Hey Boys,

I love the effort in keeping up with the posts this summer, it is a marketed improvement over last summer.

You routinely ask your fans for input, and to help with the growth of NYRangerscast. So in an effort to help improve the site, and the show, I’d like to make a suggestion for you to mull over.

I was wondering if there is something (other than the lack of content to talk about) that is keeping you away from the studio to do more shows. I realize that you probably fill up your free time in the summer with other responsibilities, but if it IS primarily due to a lack of content, I’d like to offer you the following advice:

Create a re-occuring post asking the fans of the NYRangerscast to submit their questions to you. Indicate that the post is for questions only, and that answers should not be discussed in the comments section so that they can be saved for the show. Think like what Stan Fischler does with his blog series “ask the Maven”, except respond via podcast instead of the blog.

This way fans have more NYRangerscast content to look forward to, and you keep the fan base going strong over the summer hiatus, which will make the transition to the start of next season effortless.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Welcome Nick

I like Plebains idea… Pesonally, I would like to hear Steve & Erics thoughts on things like how the Garden “sold out 150 games straight” even though there were a ton of empty seats at many games… how the “Garden faithful” are very known to boo their own team even if theyre just down a goal, and why the fans think that Avery deserves to be treated like “any other player” when he consistantly draws negative attention to himself game in and game out.

Just a couple examples.

1. because of corporate fatcats who dont actually show up to the games they bought tickets for.

2. Cause if the GM is going to throw money out the window on schlubs like Malik, Redden, Rozival Gomer, etc, I reserve the right to express my feelings on the matter during the game.

3. Because you cant confuse the rules with manners. A rule is a rule, and if players slash him, trip him, board him, and headhunt him, he deserves a call, even if he does act like a child sometimes. Brodeur whines like a child, and he gets calls all the time. Maybe you have to be a fat tool to get the refs attention

oh, sorry, was I supposed to save the answers for the show?
